“Go. Take her back to the cabin. Calm your wolf down. We'll be along shortly.”
I was relieved when Paige let me lead her back to the car. Kano jogged after us.
“Wait up. I'll drive you back up,” he volunteered.
“Thanks man. I really appreciate everything you and Killian did today. I'm sorry you both know what I was going through.”
He was quiet until we settled into the van.
“Have you heard of the Raglan?”
“I have.”
“What’s the Raglan?” Paige asked.
“Who,” I explained. “They were a group of humans capturing shifters to experiment on them. I was only privileged to know about it because of Thomas. It wasn’t widely talked about because it could have caused unnecessary hysteria.”
“Well, we didn't know about them until they kidnapped our father. So yeah, my brother and I know exactly what it's like to have a loved one disappear.”
“Did you ever find him?”
“We did. Thanks to Westin Force. Bravo team came in and caused quite the stir. My sister's mate was among them. It brought a bit of contention because he'd been banished from the Clan years earlier. We didn't know he was Olivia's mate.”
The pain in his voice told me there was a lot more to that story than he was telling us.
“I'm sorry. But I'm glad they found him.”
“Me too. And I'm glad we found you, Paige, too.”
He pulled up in front of the house but didn't get out.
“I need to get back down there and help. We'll be back soon.”
“Thanks again.”
I got out and waited for Paige to join me. We stood on the porch as Kano drove away. For a second, I thought she was going to bolt.
“Sweetheart, are you okay?”
She shook her head.
“I shouldn’t be here, Emmett. I have to leave now.”
“Why?” I asked, a little colder than I meant.
I'd just found her. Didn't she realize the hell I'd just been through to find her? I had her back now, and I wasn't about to let her out of my sight anytime soon.
“I'm not safe here. He'll kill me.”
“Who? Eugene?”
“No. Thomas.”
Before I could ask her what the hell she was talking about, the front door flung open and Esme ran out. She threw her arms around my mate, making my heart flutter.
I needed to get Paige alone and find out what had happened and what was going on, but my mom and Esme were fussing over her.
“My head is hurting. I think I need to go lay down,” she finally said, excusing herself.
