Emmett

Chapter 1

“Emmett, do you have a sec to talk?”

“For the Alpha or for Thomas?”

“Is there a difference?”

“Absolutely.”

He chuckled. “Your Alpha then.”

“Well shit, that means it’s serious. What’s wrong?”

“Nothing’s wrong. Why does something have to be wrong?”

“Because you have that look in your eye.”

“No, I don’t.”

“Yes, you do.”

I’d known Thomas Collier my entire life, and after years of playing poker together, I knew all of his ticks. He was holding back on something. I could tell he was slightly uncomfortable, and he kept glancing toward my left shoulder. It was his tell anytime he was bluffing. He was definitely up to something.

“Whatever. We can do this later if it’s a bad time.”

“Seriously Thomas, what’s up?”

“You’ve been an unofficial supervisor for the ranch hands for a while now.”

“Is there a problem?”

“Yeah.”

“What’s wrong? What did I do? Be Thomas for a sec and tell me as a friend, dammit.”

I was about to get fired by one of my best friends and I had no clue why.

He chuckled. “I’m not firing you.”

“You’re not?”

“No, I’m doing a terrible job trying to promote you, and I really hope you don’t make me grovel and beg for this because I really need someone, no, I really need you for this job. It has to be someone I trust.”

“Promote me to what?”

“Ranch Foreman. You’ll mostly be overseeing the cowboys and scheduling duties.”

“That’s all?”

“Yup. So will you do it?”

“Does it come with a raise?”

“Yes, a sizable one.”

I scowled. “You’re an asshole.”
