“If that’s the case, then why keep up the charade of being allies?”
“Imagine another family telling us directly that they don’t trust us and won’t deal with us anymore. That would start a war.”
“And nobody wants to go to war with Lucas Cosa Nostra.”
“Exactly that.”
“That still doesn’t explain how you plan to lure out The Black Rose.”
“I’ve got eyes on all my guys. If it was one of them, I would know.”
“Everybody says that—even Rolando, and his capos let their guard down and The Black Rose got to Gianni.”
His eyes widened and he spit out a slew of profanity.
“Gianni will be fine, but he’s beaten pretty badly, and the priest was killed.”
“I saw that on the news and put everyone on high alert.” He shook his head. “So that’s how it happened.”
“Unfortunately. I’m here to give Rolando a chance to fix things with Dameon.”
“He’s your father, Dominic.”
“His name is fuckin’ Dameon, isn’t it?”
We stared at each other, and Bruno knew not to push me.
He nodded. “Don’t call him that shit in front of the others.”
“Thank you, genius.”
He glared and I glared back. “As I said, if The Black Rose is one of us, it isn’t one of mine. I’ve watched their whereabouts for the last few months. When The Black Rose strikes, their movements are accounted for, which means it’s no one under my watch.”
I nodded. “That’s smart, but it could take years to put eyes on everyone in the Lucas Cosa Nostra.”
“Yes. But what other choice do we have? We either spend years running in circles with our tails tucked between our fuckin’ legs or… enact the process of elimination.”
I nodded and looked beyond the garden to the house where I saw Penelope looking out the bathroom window. My dick jerked. That was happening more often now that I’d been inside her. Over the last few days, I’d fucked her relentlessly and she’d welcomed it like a starved fiend.
“What does you coming here have to do with Rolando? Can you two not reside in the same city?”
“There’s tension.”
“Why?”
“You know why.”
“Argh! He wants to be in control so bad.”
I nodded. “It’ll never happen. Dameon needs to get rid of him.”
Bruno’s eyes widened. “Good luck with that happening.”
“It can be done.”
He stared at me in silence and neither one of us spoke for a few minutes.
“Dominic.”
