“To what?”

“So you could eat, and we could….”

I waited for her to continue, and another roar of thunder raged through the sky.

“Please don’t leave.”

This woman, with whom I had no business with outside of regular campus hours, made me act out of my norms. And nothing I did to deter her, did.

“I can get food anywhere, Penelope. I can’t stay here with you.”

“Why? I’m an adult, so spare me the student-teacher bullshit.”

“That’s a nasty mouth you got there, Penelope. I didn’t take you for a filthy girl.”

“That’s because you won’t stay around me long enough to find out.”

My dick was at it again, pulsing against my pants, wanting to be freed.

I sucked in a breath, turned my back, and went to my bike, throwing my leg over and adjusting my helmet.

Another round of thunder crackled, and she dropped her keys and ran into the house, leaving the door ajar. I frowned, hesitated, and locked my jaw.

“Go, Lucas,” I chanted to myself. “Get the fuck out of here.”

Still, I hesitated, watching the entrance to her home while willing myself to leave.

I glanced down her street. Penelope’s neighborhood was quiet; it was a suburban population located in an upscale part of New York. It was apparent that she was wealthy which made me wonder about her family’s background.

A loud crash inside her home made me dismount from the bike.

“Fuck.”

I climbed the porch and entered, crossing the foyer and slamming the door behind me. My eyes carried over high tray ceilings, mirrors that lined the walls, and vivid yellow and orange colors splashed throughout her decor.

It was easy to find her. She’d turned on a light in every room she entered, creating a path to her bedroom.

I paused at the entrance and glanced around the large space to the canopy bed, where she covered herself with a duvet.

Frowning, I entered slowly, crossing the room to a window to inspect the neighborhood again. It was a habit of mine.

Technically, Dameon had ordered me to stick with bodyguards at all times. The Lucas Cosa Nostra was not without enemies. But he knew I was a lone wolf. Therefore, I kept my guard high and always assessed wherever I found myself.

“What is with you and thunderstorms?” I asked. I turned my attention her way when she yanked the cover off her face.

“I thought you were leaving?”

I sighed. I hated repeating myself, and if Penelope had been paying attention, she would know this by now.

She licked her lips. “It’s a ridiculous story I don’t want to recount.”

Thunder made her jump back underneath the cover.

“Are you going to be okay when I leave?”

“No.”

My nostrils flared. “What do you normally do when there’s a thunderstorm?”
