Ridge grinned when Gage snorted.

“Complicate it? Hell, they’d turn it into a fiasco.”

Kaleb laughed out loud. “That’s no lie.”

Chapter Five

Before Ridge could say anything, Darian was back with Ellie, pulling her along by the hand. He could tell she was reluctant to be there and extremely nervous standing in front of the four men.

“I’m trouble, aren’t I? I’m sorry,” she said. “I can get my things and leave. The last thing I want to do is cause problems. I think…”

Darian held up a hand. “Enough, honey. Listen to Ridge, please.”

Ridge sat forward and rested his elbows on his knees. “I’m looking for a housekeeper.”

Her eyes widened. “Really?”

“Yes. My last one got married and moved. Would you like to do something like that?”

“I think I’d be good at that,” she said excitedly.

“The thing is, I live on a ranch several hours away, so you wouldn’t get to see your friends very much.”

“But I would get to see them every once in a while?”

Ridge nodded. “Yes, Sweetheart. I’d make sure of it.”

“Does it have animals on it?”

Ridge grinned. “More animals than you can count.”

Her eyes widened in excitement. “Can I pet them?”

“Only the ones I say you can. Some of them aren’t very nice.”

He watched her think it over a bit.

“When would you want me there?” she asked.

“I’m going home tomorrow, and I want you with me.”

“Oh, wow, that soon?”

Ridge nodded. “Yes, I’m sorry, I have to get back, and I won’t be able to come back for several weeks. We’ve been without a housekeeper for a few months, so we’re getting desperate.”

“Would I be by myself?”

“No, I’m sorry I forgot to tell you about Maggie. She cooks for me. She used to take care of the house, but she’s gotten on in years and can’t do the steps anymore. You might have to help her with a few things.”

“I’d love to help her.”

Ridge held back his smile at her exuberance and eagerness. “That’s great.”

“I’m not sure what to do. It’s a big step, isn’t it?”

“Yes, but you’ll have me there for you. I really need you, Ellie.”

He saw her face brighten up, and Darian’s smile grow, and he knew he had her.
