“What texts?” His hands slide around my back and down to my ass, gently squeezing. He gives me an innocent look, his lips twitching. “I didn’t say anything about texts. But it looks like you were getting undressed. Let me help you.”

“Rylan.” I pull away, still smiling. “You know I’m going shopping with Georgia soon. I don’t want to keep her waiting.”

“Hmph.” He gives me a look of mock indignation. “Fine. But I expect you to make it up to me later. And—” He pauses, his tone going low and rough. “Buy some more lace things. Please?”

“I will.” Grabbing a shirt from the closet—a little gray T, good enough—and pull it over my head. Reaching out my hand, commanding my stomach not to lurch around drunkenly like it always does when I think about my phone, I ask, “Is it someone I want to talk to?”

Rylan raises his eyebrows at me. “Of course. Do you think I’d bring the phone to you if it was something bad?”

Right. Of course. “Sorry.”

He kisses my cheek and slides the phone in my hand. “It’s fine, love. And I saw the message pop up. It’s Erin.”

I’m already smiling as I swipe open the message.

Hey you, how is life in Sleepy Hollow? And living with all those good-looking men?

Glancing in the closet mirror, I give my hair a quick smooth before responding.

It’s great! Although I’m only concerned with MY man. ????

I head into the living room, searching for my purse. The three dots blink for a second.

Good!! I’m so happy for you! Conor and I will have to come visit.

I snag my purse from the back of a dining chair and quickly type back to Erin.

That would be awesome! Guess what? I got a new job. Counsel for B&A full time!

Erin’s reply pops up almost immediately.

That’s amazing! They’re lucky to have you. And, best commute ever!

The doorbell chimes, and I realize it must be Georgia. Rylan goes to answer the door while I send one more message.

I know! I have to go, shopping trip with Georgia. But I’ll call you later. Say hi to Conor for me.

Before I stash my phone in my purse, her response flashes across the screen.

Sounds good. Have fun! ??

I look up to find Georgia standing by the front door, chatting with Rylan. “Sorry! I was just texting with my friend, Erin.” Glancing at Rylan, I add, “She wants to come visit. With Conor, of course.”

“That sounds like a great idea.” His eyes crinkle up, soft and loving. “Then I can thank her for bringing us together.”

Oh. I think I just melted into a gooey puddle on the floor.

“You guys are so cute.” Georgia beams at us. “I just knew you two would be good for each other.”

Rylan ruffles her hair. “Okay, matchmaker Georgia, go work your magic on Finn next.”

“Pshh.” She pushes his hand away, crinkling her nose at him. “Finn’s determined to stay single. Anyway—” Her gaze shifts to me. “Are you ready to go?”

After a quick glance in my purse—wallet, phone, chapstick, pepper spray, keys—I nod at her. “Ready.”

“Hang on.” Rylan tugs me in for a hug, wrapping his arms around me. He presses a kiss to my crown, then leans back, holding my gaze. His features are tight, his jaw rigid, and worry lurks in his eyes.

“Be careful,” he says, soft but urgent. “Stick with Georgia at all times.”
