“Somehow, I think you would have found a way to do that if you could. It doesn’t matter how long it took. All that matters is you are here now.” I snuggled into his arms again.
“All that matters is we’re together. I lost you once, I’m not going to do it again. You will be my wife. We will have the life together that we want to have.”
“Luke, I want that too. You have no idea how much it means to hear you say that, but how?” I leaned back to look at him.
“You love me?” Luke asked.
“Of course,”
“You want to be with me?”
“Yes.”
Luke gave me a look as if he was going to say the other questions, he liked to ask me. It was not the right place because if he did, I would want to have him right there on the table in the coffee shop.
“Will you marry me?” Luke asked.
“Yes. Of course. You’ve already asked; I’ve already said yes. But if you need to ask me again, I will say yes, a thousand times.”
Luke gave me a slow smile and then said, “Good. How do you feel about getting married tonight?”
Chapter 26
Luke
I had never been happier to have money and influence as I did the night I married Natalie. It only took two phone calls for us to get a license and a judge willing to see us so late to officiate the wedding.
Natalie looked breathtaking in her floral dress. She had pulled her hair up so that ringlets cascaded down the side of her face, and found a bouquet of flowers to complete the look. I felt bad that she wasn’t getting a proper wedding. I would give it to her eventually. If she wanted, she could have the biggest and most extravagant wedding the world had ever seen.
Eventually, I wanted the world to know that I loved Natalie, that she was my wife, that we would be together forever. For now, I just wanted the deed done so that we could get my son and his threats out of our lives forever.
I hardly heard the words the judge said. All I cared about was Natalie, holding her hands, and hearing her say that she would love honor and obey me for as long as we both shall live. I repeated the words, letting the magnitude of having the woman I loved, who I wanted by my side forever, become truly mine.
Natalie had a look of reassurance, promise, love, and commitment shining in her eyes as I cupped her face. She kept the smile on her face until my mouth was inches from hers. Her lips were soft and yielding as I pressed my lips against hers. I had kissed her countless times before but this one felt different. It was more; I was kissing my wife and it made all the difference in the world.
The judge congratulated us and we held hands as we practically ran out of the courthouse. It was late and there was no one around. We laughed as I pulled her into my arms and kissed her.
“Hello there, Mrs. Miller,” I said against her lips.
“Well, hello back, Mr. Miller.”
“We did it. You’re my wife.”
“Yes. Now and forever.”
“I promise I will make you the happiest woman who has ever lived. I will make up for this wedding with another one. We will have a huge reception inviting everyone we know and even people we don’t. I want the world to know that you are mine.”
“Luke, all I need is you. All I want is this. I have everything I want if I can be by your side.”
“And now you will be. But there is one more thing we need to do.”
“We can get to that as soon as we get home,” Natalie said and I laughed.
“Oh, there is going to be plenty of that. First, we need to get Ethan off our backs once and for all.”
Natalie gripped my arm and asked, “How are you going to do that?”
“Easy. We’re going to tell the world that we got married. I have a press release already set. It’ll go out first thing tomorrow morning. The only thing we need is a picture of us and our rings.”
