“It was also in how you were in the kitchen last night. I didn’t need to tell you what needed to be done. We were a team and it feels like we always have been. I forget sometimes that I’ve only known you a few days. I feel that I have known you forever.”

Natalie smiled at me and I leaned back and waited for her to speak.

“I feel the same way. I don’t know, I can just look at you and it seems so obvious what you’re going to do or what you’re thinking or going to say. I can’t explain it,” Natalie said.

“Exactly. I’m the same with you. I know you’re young and you might think this is something that’s easy to find, or that you might find it with someone younger or closer to your age.”

It was Natalie’s turn to lean back and look at me. Her eyes searched mine and she shook her head. We had never talked about our age difference. I wanted to think it wasn’t an issue, but it might be. She was young, she might want someone her own age. She might have agreed to marry me but did she really mean it? I might want this to be forever, but she might not understand what that really meant.

“I love you, Luke. I have from the moment I saw you. I want you. You have no idea how much. All I have to do is look at you and I want you. Do you have any idea how many guys I have dated, slept with, even talked to, hoping that I would find even half of what I feel for you? I never did.

“Like you, I had given up. Ethan seemed like a nice guy. I thought I could be happy with him. I wanted to get married, have a family, get some of the stability I never had in my life. I thought he could give it to me. But I know now he couldn’t.

“He might make a great husband to someone else one day. There are times I doubt that, and I’m sorry to say something like that about your son.”

“It’s true. He’s too young and inexperienced to be getting married. He needs to grow up, and I’m not sure if he ever will.”

“I was willing to be with him because I thought that was what I wanted. What I should do with my life. I was done with law school. It was time to get serious about my future and I thought I could find that with Ethan. I had no idea someone like you existed much less that you would want to be with me. I don’t care how old you are. Age is just a number. You have more energy, more drive, more ambition now than Ethan or any other man I’d been with ever had.

“You are the only man I want. I want to be with you if you want me,” she said.
