Chapter 20
Simone
––––––––
“WHEN DO YOU TAKE THE LSAT?”
“In two weeks.”
“How are you juggling studying, working, softball, and Simone?” Sylvie giggles after saying my name.
Greg shrugs as he tosses his baseball glove onto a bench. “It’s a skill.”
Sylvie bumps his arm with hers, and he angles away from her as if she’s offending him. “I imagine you’re good at all the right skills.”
Greg frowns, and Nico asks, “How many times can you take the test?”
“Seven total, but it doesn’t look good if you’ve taken it over three times. I don’t plan to fail the first.”
Sylvie says, “I failed the first time. You’ve got to study, study, study. I can help you out there, Rod.”
“Uh, Amos lets me study at work, and he’ll give me practice tests next week.”
Sylvie touches Greg’s forearm, and he flinches. Doesn’t she take a hint? “Whatever you need, I’ll help.”
I roll my eyes. That bitch will claw her way into Greg’s bed. For now, he’s in mine. But wait. Is he studying enough? He seems to be on a date or at my apartment all the time.
“What’s on your mind?”
I glance at Hadley and turn away from the dugout. “I was just thinking that I’m so glad my internship at the hospital ended today.”
Hadley nods, but still watches whatever is happening behind me. “How is it going with Rod?”
I frown and try to sound bored. “Is that the only thing anyone cares about in my life? He’s whatever. At home, he’s playing a role. As long as my father isn’t here, he couldn’t give a rat’s ass if anyone finds out the truth about us.”
Hadley smirks. “I think he likes it.”
I sigh and grab Hadley’s shoulders. She’s shorter, so I have to look down as I say, “Please just don’t. He doesn’t like this. I don’t like this. My father is gone after graduation. I’ll be leaving soon after. Greg will be in law school and have no time for a life. There’s nothing to see here, Hadley. I swear to Baby Jesus, all His toddler disciples, and angel preschooler friends. If you want to play matchmaker, find someone else. You’re wasting taxpayer dollars.”
