I tried to have a good time despite the present population, but I was too worried about saying or doing something that Dominic would deem upsetting. It felt like I was tiptoeing through broken glass.
When he told me to sit and wait for him, I was much more than just relieved. With an audible huff, I sat in one of the chairs at a table near the door and just people-watched.
I didn't know anyone here personally, but if they were all glad-handing with Dominic, I'd believe that all of them had some stake in the underworld. I was associating with known criminals. Not really my scene.
On the opposite side of the tent, servers walked around with small platters filled with appetizers and finger foods while the band played covers of popular music. A few people danced on the dance floor, all of them looked stiff as if they were waiting for something to pop off.
I wondered how quickly a gunfight could occur when so many of the city's scourge were in attendance. My stomach flipped at the thought. I didn't want to be in a position where I'd have to run for my life. That wasn't my idea of a good time.
I crossed my legs and sat back just waiting for Dominic to be finished, anxious to get back to his house.
A server passed by my line of sight and offered me a small shrimp roll. I didn't realize until the aroma of the delectable food hit me that I hadn't eaten all day. My stomach growled, and I was sure if the music wasn't so loud, everyone would've heard it.
I reached forward and picked up two of the flaky finger foods before I thanked the server who was already on her way to the next person to serve.
I took a small bite of the shrimp roll, and my eyes fluttered closed as the delicious flavor assaulted my tongue.
It could possibly be that I was starving to death, and that's why it tasted so good, but I was going with whoever was throwing this party wanted to make sure their guests had the best of everything. I don't think I've ever tasted anything so delectable in my life.
I polished off the first shrimp roll before looking around and taking a bite into my second one.
A droplet of juice along with some of the stuffing fell onto the skirt of my dress, and alarm bells fired off in my mind. I wondered if Dominic would think me a klutz because I got myself messy. I knew how much this dress cost; the tags were left on when I put them up in the closet.
Five thousand dollars for a dinner dress was more than I'd ever spent on all my wardrobe.
My eyes shot up looking for Dominic just to check if he'd seen my little faux pas, but I found he wasn't paying any attention to me. Instead, he was paying all of his attention to the raven-haired supermodel who'd just leaned up to kiss him.
Heat shot up my spine, and my ears felt like they were burning with embarrassment. He'd spent all this time badgering me about making sure I'd played my part well, and the minute he was out of my grasp, he cuddled up to the next woman.
How the hell was this supposed to give people the impression that he was married?
I dropped the rest of my uneaten finger food onto the table in front of me and stared at the two of them interacting. He seemed so at ease with her. Did he have a previous relationship with her? Did he want to rekindle what they shared? I'd never seen him so at ease with me.
I grabbed onto the edge of my seat, and as hard as I tried to stop it, I couldn't hold back the wave of jealousy that took over me. He's supposed to be mine. My eyes stayed glued to them as I watched them talk and smile at each other. I couldn't tell what she was saying, but just from the way she eyed him, I knew the conversation was erotic in nature. He was making me look like a complete fool in front of all these people, and I couldn't do anything besides sit here and take it.
"You look lonely, Farrah. Did you need someone to keep you company?"
At first, I didn't react to the sound of someone calling me my sister's name, but when a handsome blond man moved close enough to block the edge of my vision, I knew that it was me he was referring to.
"Oh, no, I'm not. I was just off in my own world," I said, looking up to smile at him.
"Yeah, I miss that world of yours. And come to find out I may never have a chance to visit again. Is it true you married Dominic Lochley?" The man asked while he pulled up a chair to sit next to me.
I focused my attention on him and looked him up and down, instantly feeling uneasy by how comfortable he seemed to be with me. Of course, he didn't think it was me he was talking to. He thought it was my sister. Time for me to play my part.
"Yeah, you heard right. Dominic and I are a thing now." I smiled demurely before I focused my gaze on the man again.
"Does he know how much of a freak you are? I mean truly?" He leaned forward, nearly whispering in my ear.
I bit the inside of my mouth to stop the shock from displaying on my face.
"Of course, he doesn't. Why do you think he married me? He knows I can give him things no one else can." I giggled haughtily.
"Hmm, how adverse would you be to giving me a little more of that while he gets used to what's his. I promise no one would ever know." The man leaned over, placing one of his hands on my thigh before he squeezed lightly.
If I was acting in my right mind, I'd have leaned over to grab the glass of water that was sitting on the table to toss in this man's face. Of course, I don't think that's something Farrah would do. She would bask in the attention that she was getting.
I licked my lips and turned my full attention back to the man sitting next to me.
