I shrug and turn back to keeping surveillance, "If you want peace, prepare for war."
Giancarlo groaned as the both of us turned forward and stared out at the house we're going to attack this time tomorrow.
* * *
"This is a shit plan." Gian grumbles as I continue to dig into the dirt looking for the cable line.
"This is the only fucking plan we've got right now. It's just you and I against nearly two dozen others. On top of that you're not even supposed to be here. If I get caught I don't want them finding you as well."
"What does it matter if they find me. I bet that would really piss Babbo off if he found out that I helped you." Giancarlo shook his head, his long hair covering one side of his face not letting me see the emotions I was sure I'd find there.
"Who gives a fuck about what Babbo thinks, you've got other family. Even though you're not together right now I'm sure Rosie would lose her shit if something were to happen to you. Think about your future brother."
His eyes open wide and there's a ghost of a smile playing on his lips, "Think of my future? Who the hell are you and what the hell did you do with my brother? You've never given a damn about the future. Only the next job."
"Finding my purpose and an heir is enough to change my perspective a bit," I respond as I wrap my hand around a large cord. I pull out a sharp curved blade and place it against the thick wire. "Are you ready for this?"
"What does it matter if I'm ready for it or not? It's not like I'm going to be in there with you." He rolls his eyes before he reaches over and pulls me into a hug.
Usually, I don't like to dive into any personal emotions right before a job but I can understand his need. This may be the last time that I see my brother alive. I've set it up that he stay as safe as possible and that means he won't be able to come inside with me as I try to face off against what should be my biggest opponent. The entire Isley family.
"I love you, kid, even if I never got a real chance to show it." Gian pushes me away and I'm stunned for a moment that he'd actually say those words. I never thought I was worthy of my family's love. Always thought they all saw me as a failure. The same way my father does.
"Stay safe Gian, I mean that." I nod once before I yank the knife up hard and cut through the main network wire. Within seconds I watch as most of the electronics and surveillance equipment starts to go down.
The best thing about living in the age of the internet is that almost everything is connected through it. I shoot Giancarlo one last look and he's already got his eye to the scope of his gun. He's not going to take anyone out unless they get too close to the perimeter without me being able to take them out. I worked through the entire night laying traps just to make sure I had everything covered but there was no telling what could go wrong.
Keeping as low to the ground as I can, I swing my rifle over my shoulder and hold it against my back so it's not in the way. Keeping my eyes on the prize I rush toward the side door and come across my first guard. I wanted to take him out first mostly because I know he's a slacker. I watched him take more smoke breaks than anyone else and at one point he was sleeping in the chair when he should've been watching the door. Instead of going for my noisy weapon, I pull my blade out poised and ready to take the young man out. The second he turns his head away from my direction I stand, grab hold of his hair, pull his head back and slice his neck. His eyes go wide as he tries to scream and nothing comes out.
I let the body drop down to the ground before I press myself against the wall of the building. I can see inside the small surveillance room and just like I hoped the screens are nothing but snow.
"Peter! Report! Did you find anything?"
My eyes go down to the sound and I pick up the walkie talkie that's hooked onto my latest victim's hip. At least with this, I'll be able to find out what the security knows. My heart thunders in my chest as I mentally run down the rest of my soon-to-be victims. There's a lot of chatter on the walkie talkie, unfortunately, they realize that something is wrong too fast. If I don't get a move on it I'm going to get caught before I can complete my test.
One by one I take out any opposition that I come across. It's as easy as breathing for me, not so much because I enjoy killing which I do but because I know that my families life is on the line. I'll cut the head off every last person in this house if it meant that Stella and Chance would be safe.
By the time I circle the entire perimeter I've already killed at least twelve of the guards, but none of the family members. That's is the most important part of the test. My father wants to make sure there are no more Isley family members alive to question him when he takes over their throne.
It didn't matter to me. I've never wanted to be at the table or fight for leadership. I'm not interested in any of that.
"They're in the house. They have to be in the house." I hear someone say on the walkie talkie.
I don't know the Isley family well enough to know what any of them sound like but from the way the person is talking it makes me think they don't train in the art of stealth. Now I know they are looking for me through the house. I have to stay outside for as long as I can. I use the gutters to crawl up to the second floor of the house and stand right outside one of the main rooms. I peek into the room to see a man peering out the door and into the hallway opposite me.
If I can sneak up behind him I can take him out without alerting the others. From the look of just his build I can tell that this isn't the oldest brother in the Isley clan but one of the middle ones. He might have been a good kid for all I knew. Unfortunately, I didn't have the luxury of sparing him just because he might be a good person.
I pushed open the double doors that led from the balcony into the main room and slowly snuck into the room. My footsteps were nearly silent as I inched up behind him.
At the very last second, he turned in my direction. Surprise and shock exploded on his face as he registered the fact that I was in the room with him. He was face to face with a killer.
"What the fuck!" he yelled out but I was already on the attack. I punched him as hard as I could directly in the center of his chest causing him to suck in a harsh rush of air and bend forward. I grabbed the back of his head and with all the force I can muster, I kneed him in the face. I can feel the crunch of his nose against my kneecap.
His legs buckled and he crumbled down to the ivory-carpeted floor underneath him. His blood seeped out from his nose as he gasped and choked.
"It's nothing personal," I tell him as I lift my knife over my head and bring it down right where his heart should be. He's gone before I even pull the blade out. One down on to the next one.
I didn't want to stay in the house so I rushed back to the balcony and climbed up to their roof. The last time I checked there was no security up there. That didn't mean that there wasn't any now.
