"Put the gun down." Giancarlo grits.

"That's not what I fucking asked you!" His father yells and pulls the hammer on his weapon back.

"I'll do it. I'll fucking do it. Just put the gun down." Giancarlo answers, his voice cracking and his body shaking with adrenaline.

"I knew I could count on you." His father smiles and drops the gun to his side.

A pitiful cry sounds next to me and I turn my head just as I watch Rosie run out of the room. This was obviously not what anyone expected.

"Now back to this wonderful food." Their father sat down at Rosie's table and continued with his dinner. Everyone else simply stared at him but no one made a sound. I'd never seen someone so cold in my life.

My eyes dart over to the siblings only to find Vitto staring at me. There's a twinge of relief on his stoic face. A few minutes ago we thought that we wouldn't be allowed to be together. I feel horrible about what is going on between Rosie and Giancarlo but I'd be absolutely out of my mind not to be a little happy I get to keep Vitto for myself.

A loud cry startles the room and I take off in the direction. Chance is awake.

"What the fuck is that?" Vitto's father barks and the dread that was slowly leaving my body slams back into me double time.

He already wants me dead. Who knows what he'll do once he finds out he has a grandson from a woman who he sees as nothing but a contract?

I run to the room to gather Chance into my arms with an army of footfalls coming in close behind me.

Vitto's father is the first one through the door after me.

"You sneaky bitch."

Twenty-Four

Vitto

Fear.

Once again this foreign emotion is running rampant in my body. My father is already on edge and I don't know what he's going to do once he finds out that I've got a child. So far Xander is the only one of his children with offspring and he had to marry his woman in order for Babbo to come around to it.

Stella and I aren't married and the child is already born.

"Please..." Stella begs and does her best to quiet Chance.

"Vittore!" Babbo calls for me and I rush to get in between him and my family.

"Father," I reply trying to keep my voice as calm as possible.

"What is that?" He points at Chance as if he were a piece of vermin instead of a child.

"He is Chance, and your grandson." I lift my chin and wait for whatever reprimand is to come my way. I've never raised a hand to my father but if he tries to hurt either one of them I'm sure it's going to be a blood bath.

"You useless waste of space! I should've killed you the minute you took your first breath!" My father screamed in my face before grabbing my collar and flinging me across the room . The man might be old but he's still strong. I stumble to the side but quickly get back to my feet so I can protect Stella and Chance.

"Stop! Please stop!" Stella yells out from behind me as Babbo raises his hand and punches me straight in the face. The blow rattles my brain. I'm not at my peak. With the infection and the other injuries I've suffered, I'm not going to be able to take much more of the abuse.

Of course, if it means that I'll be able to keep his wrath away from Stella and Chance I'll let him beat me to the ground.

"Babbo!" Christine's voice rings through the chaos and my father finally pulls back.

My father turns to look at her, the hatred clear in his eyes.

"It's done already. There's nothing we can do." She reaches over and tries to put a hand on his forearm.

In my father's typical fashion, he swats it away before reeling back and smacking her across the face.
