Chapter 3
Maggie
“And today, folks, we have Lovely Oblivion in the studio with us,” the radio announcer spoke into his microphone. “Say hi to the listeners, ladies.”
The band all chimed in at once. “Hi.” “Hello.” “Hey.” “Greetings.” “Good afternoon.”
They sat around the radio broadcast room, all wearing headsets.
The young male announcer for KADY radio had glasses and a short haircut. He fiddled with a pen in his hand as he spoke to the band.
“Your latest song has received a great response. It climbed the charts almost immediately and now it’s been sitting at #1 for weeks. How does it feel?”
“It’s amazing,” Bex said. “Our fans are wonderful, and we wouldn’t be here without them. I speak for all of us when I say none of us ever imagined this would happen. We owe a big thank you to our listeners.”
“You’re touring right now. Where are some of your major stops?”
Their guitarist Polly said, “We’re on the east coast right now with shows scheduled for Birmingham, Richmond, Philadelphia, and so forth. We’re headed up the coast to Madison Square Garden, then we’re flying across the States to the west coast. Check our website for specific tour dates.”
“What show do you ladies most look forward to on this tour?”
Murmurs went around the group. Maggie spoke up, “We look forward to all the shows, but collectively I think Madison Square Garden is a high point for us. We’ve all wanted to play there, and this is our first chance.”
“That makes sense. Any plans to celebrate after the show?”
Maggie smiled and winked at him. “That’s top secret.”
The announcer held up his hands in a surrender gesture. “Don’t shoot me. I don’t know any of your secrets and I would never tell anyone. We certainly aren’t on the air,” he teased.
The conversation continued for half an hour, an easy banter flowing between the band and the DJ.
“Well, that wraps up today’s chat with Lovely Oblivion, folks. Thanks for coming to our show, ladies,” the announcer said.
“Thanks for having us,” Bex said. They wrapped up the interview and said their goodbyes.
The band loaded into a stretch Hummer in the parking lot that was scheduled to take them to the airport.
“This isn’t inconspicuous at all,” Bex commented as they climbed in.
The car arrived at the airport and unloaded. Their bags were already supposed to be there. They were met by screaming fans and paparazzi.
Once they got past the screaming crowd and into the airport, things calmed down significantly. As they lined up to go through security, all their heads turned when they heard shouting. A streaker ran up to Bex, declared his love, and ran off with security guards chasing him.
The band members all laughed and boarded their flight, hopeful that the streaker’s behavior was not an indicator of how the rest of the tour would go.
