They put on their seatbelts, he flicked on the lights, shifted the car to drive, and pulled out of the parking lot onto the road. A few streets later, he noticed a news van following them.

“We have company,” he said. “Hang on. I’ve got this.”

Maggie watched in the mirror behind them as Wylder drove random streets, backtracked, and zigzagged until finally they lost their followers.

“That was kinda fun,” Wylder said as he pulled back onto the main highway.

Maggie laughed. “I’m glad you enjoyed it.”

“Where do you want me to drop you off? Do you want to go back to your parents’ or do you want to spend the night at my place?”

“If the news knows I’m in town, they’re probably camped out at my dad’s. Maybe it would be best if you drop me off at my mom’s.”

Her mom’s house was twenty minutes from town. After the events of the day and the adrenaline rush from earlier, Wylder wasn’t sure he was ready to be that far away from her.

He said, “It’s already night time. It would probably interrupt her night if she isn’t expecting you. Why don’t you stay with me? You can have my bed and I’ll sleep on the sofa. Plus, Buzz would love to see you.”

“Are you sure?”

“Sure. I’d love to have you.” He paused a second then chuckled. “I feel like a kid saying this but, Maggie, would you have a sleepover with me?”

She laughed. “I’d love to sleep over. For Buzz.”

Wylder laughed. “Of course. For Buzz.”
