“DILF.”
She gasps. “In public?”
“Not at business lunches or dinners, but yes, pretty much everywhere else.”
“Oh my God. Now that is something I can’t wait to see.” The excitement in her voice is palpable but I feel the old twinge of anxiety in the pit of my belly at the thought of her living in this house with me.
It’s got to be done. Stella will be moving to Seattle soon. It’s been four weeks already.
I force the thoughts to the recesses of my mind and focus on the present. “So, tell me why you’ve woken me up.”
“I’ve woken you up! You’re three hours ahead of me; it’s ten p.m. in Seattle.”
“I’m usually in bed by seven and up by one a.m. My routine is not fixed, and I’m a light sleeper, so feel free to wake me up if you need.”
“What? Why would you go to bed at seven in the evening?”
“It’s just the way I am. Like I said, my routine isn’t set in stone.”
“I’m still waiting for you to tell me why you called.” I say when the line goes silent.
“Oh yeah, I’ve been going through the Fairchild history, by the way, that’s some family tree. Anyway, I have a few questions.”
“Shoot. Although I have to say that I’m impressed by your dedication. Studying like you have an exam.”
“More like a job. You want to be sure you’re getting your money’s worth. And since I’m the world’s highest-paid actress, I can’t be fumbling my lines.”
“You know you’d be forgiven if you don’t remember the names of every single member of my family and their little quirks.”
“Which is exactly what I don’t get; why the hell do people’s names change every five seconds? Is that another ancient quirk?”
“Unfortunately, yes.”
She groans. “No don’t tell me...”
“First son adopts father’s name after his father dies.”
“Oh my goodness. There’s no end to this is there? So, you mean to tell me that Ryan is just a placeholder; you will eventually be called Richard?”
“Yep. And thank you for that deafening eye roll. We should make that a spankable offense, actually.” I hear her breath hitch, and I smile.
“You don’t even know if I’ve done it.” Her voice comes out breathless.
“I’m willing to bet anything that you did.”
She giggles. “But honestly, what did you expect after dropping that on my head?”
“If that shocked you then you’re not ready to hear my children’s names.”
“Hell no. Fucking hell no. Your kids have names already?”
“Afraid so, like hurricanes, the name precedes the child.”
“I think I’m starting to see that shrink’s chair somewhere in my near future.”
I smile, “If you’re thinking of having a meltdown then let me help you get there faster. It’s Rex and Ronin for boys. Ramonda and Roquette for girls.”
“Get out of here! You’re making that up!”
