“I hope you’re more discreet about it than when you were married to Stacy,” she said, tapping her fork on the table. His affairs had played a big role in the divorce, something even Lucy knew.
“Me too.” He didn’t seem to take offense at the accusation.
“What about if she has kids? Is that okay?” The tapping continued.
“How many?” he asked.
“I don’t know! I’m just getting the parameters down.”
“One or two kids, maybe. Prefer no kids, though,” he said, looking thoughtful.
“What about if she wants kids?”
He shook his head. “No. I’m not having more kids.”
“How old?” she asked.
“I said no more kids,” he stated a little too loudly.
“I mean, how old do you want her to be?” Lucy tried to hide her grin. He was getting defensive.
“Thirty to forty-five, maybe? Try someone on the younger side. Maybe thirty to thirty-nine instead.”
“Okay, how long do I have?” she asked, letting the fork fall to the table.
“Let’s see if you’ve found someone by Friday.”
She raised an eyebrow. “What happens if I don’t?”
“Let’s say this. If you have a name by Friday, there will be a twenty-five-thousand-dollar bonus. If I marry that person, you will get a total of one-hundred grand,” he said coolly. Apparently, money meant nothing to him.
But for her, one-hundred grand bought a lot of two of everything. “Okay, let me see what I can come up with. Can I ask you more questions after this meeting, or is this a meeting room discussion only?”
“You can ask me questions, but shut the door. We’ll meet again like this on Friday.”
“Pasta again?” She pointed at the uneaten containers.
“Yes.” He agreed, as if the next meeting they would be relaxed enough to eat anything either. Her stomach was rolling, but not with hunger.
Getting up, she left the room and headed for home. She had a lot of things to think about; a lot of people to think about. Nobody was coming to mind, though. Just her and Agatha, and no way was he Agatha’s type. Agatha loved her a skinny, rocker guy, a little on the scuzzy side. But Agatha couldn’t cook. That left her on her list of two, and she wasn’t going to marry her boss for any amount of money. Not just because he had actually said he would probably sleep around on whomever it was. More because he wasn’t her type either.
