I start to run through the mental list of all the things I want to do. There’s still so much of New York that I haven’t seen. We could go to different parts of the state and see what else is going on there.
We could head to Niagara Falls, even.
Oliver pulls out his phone and sends a quick message. When he looks back at me, the corners of his eyes crinkle. “My parents aren’t going to be using their house in the Hamptons next weekend. We could head up there.”
“That sounds amazing. I could definitely use some time to relax and not worry about everything else going on around here. We could both use the time to lounge around and just do nothing.”
He finishes off his breakfast and carries the plate to the sink. “It’s set, then. We’ll go to my parents’ house.”
Time away from the city sounds nice. Though I love being here, I could use a little bit of quiet time. It would be good for me and Oliver too. We would have time to figure out exactly what is going to happen between the two of us.
It’s impossible to imagine my daily life without him, but I get the feeling that he’s still holding back at times.
Oliver heads to the door, his hands stuffed into the pockets of his scrubs. “I have no clue what time I’m going to be home today.”
I follow him to the door, kissing him before he leaves for work. Oliver lingers for a few moments longer, toying with a strand of my hair.
“I’m looking forward to getting away with you, Izzy. Also, if it helps pique your interest, my parents’ place has a pool.” He smirks and dips his head to kiss me again.
As he pulls away, I grin and raise an eyebrow. “Is that some kind of hint that I should go shopping for some skimpy bikinis?”
He gives me a look that has me wanting to grab him by the collar and drag him back to the bedroom. “It is definitely a hint.”
“I’ll see if Kate wants to come shopping with me today. Maybe if you’re lucky, I’ll send you pictures from the changing rooms.”
He groans and kisses me again. “You’re making it impossible to go to work. There used to be a time I couldn’t wait to go to work, and now look at what you’re doing to me.”
Guilt weaves its way through me as I put my hands on his shoulders and give him a gentle push out the door. “Go. You have lives to save, and I have bikinis to shop for.”
“Two vastly different days. Do you have work tonight?”
I shake my head and give him another gentle push. “Nope. I don’t. You’re going to be late. Get going.”
He smirks and kisses me quickly before heading down the hall. I stand in the doorway until he disappears into the stairwell.
No sooner is the door shut, there’s a knock at it. I sigh and open it up, wondering what Oliver forgot this time. Kate stands on the other side of the door, a bright smile on her face.
“I thought we could spend the day watching movies.” She comes in and heads straight for the couch. “I know that you said last night that you were going to have nothing to do today after Oliver went to work.”
I laugh and lock the door before following her into the living room. “I like the sounds of a movie day. Especially after making plans for the weekend.”
Kate’s eyebrows raise as she makes herself comfortable on the couch. “Oh? What are you doing for the weekend?”
“Oliver said that he wants to go to his parents’ house in the Hamptons for the weekend. Which seems like a massive step for us. We’ve been dating for weeks, and I asked him about a weekend away before and he didn’t seem interested, but now it’s like something’s shifted.”
“That sounds pretty normal to me. Did you think that nothing was going to change between the two of you the longer you dated?”
“I don’t know. It feels like things run hot and cold between us sometimes.”
Kate smiles and pats the cushion beside her. “Come take a seat. I’ve got some things to tell you about what’s going through your head right now.”
I sigh and sit down beside her, kicking my feet up on the table and pulling a throw pillow into my lap. “A thousand different thoughts about the relationship keep circling through my mind. There are days that I think we rushed into everything too quickly or that I push Oliver too hard.”
“Izzy, if the man didn’t want to do half of the things he’s doing, he wouldn’t do it.”
“You’re wrong about that.” I hold the pillow a little tighter. “You know what happened the other night with the show. He’s a people-pleaser at heart. Which isn’t the worst thing, but I keep wondering how much of what we’re doing is because he thinks it will make me happy.”
Kate grabs the remote and starts flipping through our movie options. “If it seems that way, then you need to talk to him.”
