“Time will tell for that one. We’ve only been married five minutes.”
Tyler leaned in and kissed her, drawing a big cheer from the wedding guests. Then he stood and raised his arms. “Now, it’s time to bring the party!”
* * *
The Lawson-Humes wedding was in full swing, literally. The Lawsons, Tyler’s friends, and Lily’s colleagues had swarmed onto the dance floor, mingling and spinning each other in circles. Everyone was having a good time—even Mum and Mike were joining in with the dancing.
I moved away to the back wall, needing some space from all the craziness. The long day of drinking was catching up with me, filling my senses with a warm fuzzy feeling that spread to my toes. Or maybe that was my feet going numb from wearing these heels all day.
Two arms suddenly wound around me, and I knew who it was before she even opened her mouth.
“What’re you doing over here on your own?” Rebecca asked, planting a kiss on my cheek.
“Just observing. The wedding video is going to be hilarious. I mean, look!” I pointed at Mr and Mrs Lawson, who were orchestrating a terrible Mexican wave across the dance floor. “This is gold. You’re missing it.”
“I’ve got lots of footage, and I’ve already filmed the first two times Mum’s done it. I don’t know why she’s so obsessed.” We both laughed, and she pulled me closer. “Besides, I’m missing you.”
I looked up at her, still as struck by her beauty as I always was. “Well, that’s lucky, ’cos I’ve been missing you too.”
“Very lucky indeed.” She grinned. “So, what do you say, Grant? Fancy a dance?” Before I could answer, she pulled me back towards the dance floor, bouncing to the beat of the music.
A small cheer erupted when we joined the rest of the guests and, feeling a surge of confidence, I joined in with the cheesy moves Tyler’s friends were doing. It wasn’t long before everyone was in sync and Rebecca had to run off to fetch her camera.
Lily passed around the huge bottle of champagne her uncle had bought for her, and we laughed and danced until the band announced they were going to ‘slow it down’ for a few songs. Some people left to refill drinks or give their aching feet a rest. Others split off into couples, or friendship groups, wrapping their arms around each other or waving them in the air.
Rebecca pulled me close, leading me in a slow dance to the acoustic guitar. The singer’s vocals were soft and dreamy, and I laid my head on her shoulder as we rocked. The heat of her body was enough to stir something in my core, and I held her tightly to me, feeling her hands slowly caressing my back.
She separated us for a moment to look into my eyes, and I was jolted back to our dance at prom four years ago. She smiled, seemingly thinking the same as me, her gaze drifting over my face and stilling on my lips. The drums kicked in, building to a change in the tempo, and Rebecca’s grin grew even wider.
She twined her hands in mine and began to spin me, fanning out my dress. I gasped, stumbling, as she caught me back to her chest, then threw my head back in laughter as she did it again and again.
“You’ll make me sick.” I giggled, stilling myself and gripping her biceps. Oh my.
“I bloody hope not. We don’t want a repeat of that, do we?” she teased. “I had to throw those shoes away.”
I laughed again, covering my mouth with my hand.
“Well, I’m glad you find it so funny.” She tickled me, then resumed moving my body against hers with the rhythm.
I just let her; we didn’t have to hide from anyone, and I’d never felt more free. I wrapped my arms around her neck and kissed her, trying to soak in the moment. Her soft lips. Her hands gripping my waist. How the feel of her awoke so many emotions in me, I couldn’t count them all. But one emotion in particular stole the spotlight.
I slipped my tongue into her mouth—just a touch—and Rebecca growled in response.
“Jess. That’s very dangerous,” she murmured, kissing me again.
“I think we can do one better.” I grabbed her hand and began to lead her away from the dance floor. Adrenaline pumped through my veins, encouraged a million times over by the pulsing between my legs. I’d had to go the whole day observing Rebecca in a suit, and now I needed to see her out of it.
“Where are we going?” Rebecca asked as we left through the doors and out into the corridor, leaving the music muted behind us.
“You’ll see.” I could barely contain my excitement as we made our way towards the restrooms.
“Jess…we can’t. All my family are here—”
I turned back to her, catching her checking me out. “Don’t tell me Rebecca Lawson is scared?”
Her mouth quirked. “Not scared, but let’s say…a little unsure.”
I closed the distance between us, kissing her hard. Her hands explored my body, pulling at my dress. A soft moan escaped her lips.
