“He did not survive the questioning, no, but he did answer all of our questions.”
“I hope it was not quick.”
“It wasn’t.”
This pleases me.
“So, who is she? Why did they take her?”
“The truth is that she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. They were meant to grab someone else. Someone who apparently matched her description but was not her. We looked into who she is and the people at the coffee shop nearby recognized her photo. She goes there every day and they gave us her name, thinking we were detectives. She is literally nobody. Nothing special about her.”
“Nothing?” I say in shock, thinking to myself that everything about her is special.
“It’s a good thing, man. It means they’re less likely to risk doing something stupid to get her back.”
“That’s true. What’s her name?”
“Jennifer.”
“Jennifer,” I say, feeling the way her name moves across my lips.
“Okay, man, I have to go. Look after yourself.”
“Alright. Thank you for this. I appreciate it. Stay safe, brother. We’ll chat soon.”
We hang up the phone and I pace up and down the hallways of my mansion.
Jennifer. What a beautiful name.
Do I tell her what I’ve found out? Would it break her more to know that none of the pain she suffered was even meant for her? Would it make her feel better to know that she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and got taken for no reason at all?
I stop outside her bedroom and stare at her. She has rolled onto her back, her eyes are closed, and her face is turned towards me. She is breathing softly. She looks calm.
I don’t think I can tell her. I don’t think she is well enough yet to handle any additional bad news. I just want her to focus on getting healthy and strong again, so I will not share this with her. Not yet anyway. I don’t even think I will let her know that I know her name. She will want to know how I found out. I’d rather she didn’t know that I looked into her.
I walk into the room and gently touch her cheek with the back of my fingers.
“You really are the most beautiful thing I have ever seen, little rabbit.”
Her long lashes flutter against her closed eyes, but she remains peacefully asleep.
Chapter 5 - Jennifer
Kiril walks into my room, and I automatically reach for the blanket and pull it over my body. He smiles a tight smile.
“Good morning, little rabbit. Did you sleep well?”
Apart from the few words I have said already, I find it better not to talk to him. I don’t want to give anything away about who I am. When I do get a chance to escape, I don’t want him to know where to find me.
“Not talking still? The few words you gave me earlier this week are all I am going to get out of you?” He grins at me. He is incredibly good-looking. I struggle not to stare at him and often find my gaze drifting over her sculpted arms. He wears dark suits with the sleeves rolled up. The custom fits are obvious as they hug his broad shoulders and across his chest snuggly.
He pulls the drawer open and pops open the bottle of painkillers. He holds two out to me.
I don’t know why he insists on doing this. I am perfectly capable of getting my own pills when I want them.
“Come on.” He shakes his hand.
I hold my palm open and he drops them into my hand.
