“If you truly care about him, you’ll find a way.”

Waving a hand in the air, I say, “I don’t want to have to deal with the MC.”

“Pretty sure they don’t allow women in their ranks, so you’re good.”

Mel walks back in and hands me a cup of coffee.

I stand. “Thanks. I’m going to leave you two alone.”

“Mom—”

Holding up a hand, I say, “Last time I checked, my love life was none of your business.”

Mel hands him a small brown paper bag. “Oh, what did I miss?”

“Mom is seeing Dirt.”

“Really?”

“No comment.” I place my purse on my shoulder. “Take care of him, Mel, and if you need anything, give me a call.”

“Mom, you’re being—”

Holding up my hand, I press my thumb and two fingers together and say, “Zip it! End of conversation.” I bend and kiss his forehead. “See you tomorrow.”

Chapter Fourteen

DIRT

Dane sits at the head of the table with Jonas on one side and me on the other. King is at the far end, strumming his fingers on the wooden surface as we wait for Sal to join us. At first, he was surprised we’d allow Sal into this space, but now he only seems agitated at having to wait on the man.

My phone buzzes with a text message.

Lore: Good morning!

The text is followed by a winky face, a kiss, and an eggplant emoji.

I bark out a laugh, and Dane looks at me.

“Lore,” I say by way of an explanation.

He nods, a smirk on his lips. “How is she?”

“Good.”

Jonas chuckles. “From the smile on your face, I’d say better than good.”

“Is that the old chick I saw you having breakfast with the other day?” King asks.

“She’s not old, and yeah.”

He leans forward, elbows resting on the table. “Hey, I’m not saying she wasn’t hot, but I like mine a little younger. Although they say a woman with experience is better.” He leans back and raps his knuckles on the table. “So long as you’re getting your dick dipped, it doesn’t really matter, does it?”

Ignoring him, I twist in my seat and stare at the wall.

“Aww, come on, Dirt. I’m only fucking with you.”

“Why are you here?” I ask him without moving.
