“You were in a movie?”
Eveline jumped at the rough tone of Kyle’s question. She’d been so focused on watching Cass she hadn’t heard the door to the room they were in open.
“I was. It was a few years ago.”
Kyle stalked into the room and took the seat next to her. He immediately grabbed her hand, and the warmth from the touch eased the apprehension that’d been her companion since she arrived at the offices.
“Can we watch it?” he asked.
Eveline chuckled. “Doubt it.”
“Found it,” Cass said, as if pleased with herself, although her mouth drooped down with unease.
“Where?” Eveline asked, although her gut shouted where Cass had found it.
“In Gerald’s cloud file.”
Those were the words she’d been expecting, but she still didn’t quite believe it. The man who wasn’t keen on all things to do with the cloud had a copy of her movie stored there?
The thought creeped her out. Not only did he have physical photos of her, he now had copies of her movies. How often did he watch them?
“Which film?” she asked, not really wanting to know. It wasn’t as if one of the movies was better than the other. They were all college frat house pictures, with an uncompelling storyline, but at the time she’d seen them as steppingstones.
“All three,” Cass said quietly.
“All three? Wow.” Eveline shook her head and rubbed her arms in an attempt to brush away the icky feeling this conversation was giving her.
“Is there something else going on here?” Kyle asked, putting his arm around her as if he knew the feelings tracking through her body.
Cass met her eyes.
Although the woman didn’t say it, Eveline felt as if she’d verbally urged her to fess up to what she’d kept from him. “Gerald had lots of pictures of me out and about. Going back years.”
Kyle’s fingers dug into her shoulder, and there was a tic in his jaw as though he was holding onto his temper by the merest of threads. “And you didn’t tell me this, because?”
If it weren’t his body language, anyone walking into the room would consider his question reasonable.
“I think I’ll leave you guys to this.” Cass snapped her laptop shut and stood. “I’m going to keep digging into what else Gerald has on his computer and in the cloud. And while I’ve got you both, I got confirmation that Randall was hired to trash Eveline’s place. Gerald deposited ten grand into his account two days before the event. He did it from one of the accounts he has hidden away. I’ll send you all the information, Kyle.”
Kyle nodded but didn’t say anything to his employee. His complete focus was locked on her.
Eveline couldn’t even look away if she wanted to. She wasn’t going to get out of this room without explaining everything to Kyle.
The door closed softly behind Cass, and Ox blew out a breath. Without giving Eveline any warning, he grasped the back of her head, tugged her forward and kissed her.
The second their lips collided, a little of the tension that’d been riding him since the announcement, eased a little. He’d wanted this physical connection—no not wanted, needed—it to reassure himself she was close to him.
He traced the seam of her mouth with his tongue, and when she opened, he dove in, deepening the kiss.
Telling her everything that was in his soul. Everything he wanted to say but couldn’t find the words.
Ox moved so they were standing and lifted her so she was on the table, her legs wide, allowing him to stand between them.
He wanted to push her back to the shiny surface of the table and bury himself deep inside of her. That was how strong his need to confirm that she was safe surged along his veins.
Eveline’s fingers dug into his back, clutching at the fabric of his shirt.
Did she want this as much as he did?
