Stuck-up. Difficult. Knockout.

“How are you doing now?”

The sexy little sorceress jolted and sat bolt upright in my bed, her magic sparking to life in her panic, as she scanned the room wildly until her eyes landed on me leaning against the wall.

“Where am I? What’s going on?”

Pushing off the wall, I crossed to the bed, telling her, “I brought you in here to rest. You passed out the second your head hit the pillow.”

Her eyes went wide. “How long?”

“An hour, maybe two.”

“Maybe?” she snapped. “This is no time to be so lackadaisical. Is this how you always are? It’s infuriating.”

I grinned. Getting my ass handed to me by a feisty half-pint was real amusing. In different circumstances, I’d be all over that, punishing her sweet ass until she apologized and begged for mercy. “Somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed, huh?” I said, plonking my ass down beside her.

She tensed and scrambled back away from me.

The next thing I knew, she was tossing the covers off and hightailing it out of the bed, making a break for the door.

With a burst of wolf speed, I was there, leaning over her and slapping my hand to it.

“How dare you?” she cried. “Step aside immediately.”

When I stayed where I was at, she huffed, and spun, smacking into my chest.

My breath caught as a rush of heat shot through me.

She moved away quick and it went away, some kind of pins and needles feeling left instead.

I thought I’d felt the same thing outside with her, but I’d figured it had just been some sort of weird effect from her magic.

Well, she wasn’t using that shit now.

“What was that?” I asked her.

She shrugged. “No idea.”

“You’re lying. I saw the look in your eyes. You know, woman. Spill it.”

“It’s just an odd pull between us. Forget about it,” she said, trying to blow it off.

She started for the door again now my hand wasn’t there holding it closed.

She had no hope.

She couldn’t match my speed. I was a fucking Alpha wolf. The Alpha wolf.

I took hold of her and pushed her against the wall, pinning her there with my hips.

That strange heat burned through me again, making me choke.

I fought through it to prevent it from impacting me. No way was I breaking my grip on her. “Listen up, firecracker. You aren’t leaving here for two reasons now. The first is, I know you can’t teleport yet. The big winged badass filled me in. He asked me to watch your back until sunset when you’ll apparently be back at full strength. And now the second reason? I want to know what the fuck is going on here.”
