Adrienne squawked in alarm, vaulting over the sofa, as Mhane’s back disappeared around the corner. Owen blinked at her; his mouth dropped open as Adrienne all but fell out of the door to stop Mhane.
“Jesus, she’ll kill him. Some guard you are!” Adrienne shouted at Owen.
Owen was supposed to guard Mhane and Adrienne, she supposed he wasn’t meant to protect Noah from Mhane’s wrath.
“Shit, shit, shit,” Adrienne muttered as Mhane stormed up to Noah.
Adrienne could hear Mhane shouting but not what she was saying.
His hands were fisted at his sides. Noah glanced over Mhane’s head watching as Adrienne approached without shoes and yes, she could feel every rock and stone embedded in her feet.
A particularly sharp little rock that she was pretty sure was waiting for her, cut into the bottom of her foot. It was like it was waiting for her pointy side up.
“Damn,” Adrienne cried, jumping up and down.
Wobbling her way to them instead of running, her knees knocked together, and she cursed.
Oh no, shit, shit.
The floor was coming up to meet her face as she tripped on the curb.
Adrienne cartwheeled and held out her arms, silently cursing the fact she didn’t have long sleeves on. Mhane and Noah both paused in surprise.
Her arms scraped the floor before they could move to catch her, fire burning her skin as layers ripped off. Her shins hit the edge of the curb, a hard bony blow. She snapped her head to the side, trying to prevent herself from headbutting the concrete.
A glancing blow to the side of her temple had her groaning.
She squinted to see their mouths open as she tumbled to the floor and landed at their feet, flopping to a stop on her back.
“Shit,” she moaned.
Her arms throbbed. She could feel a trickle of blood running down one and her shin bones were screaming in pain. Her head felt like it was splitting, and she was sure she saw two of Mhane as her eyes flew to her. The quick motion made her stomach turn.
Damn her stupid panicked sprint.
Noah and Mhane both sprang into action trying to help her. They bumped shoulders and almost fell on top of her. Adrienne scooted back or she tried to, but a groan escaped her.
Noah was the first to get his hands on her. He gently touched her head and hissed when his hand came away with blood.
“Oh,” she muttered weakly.
Noah tried to pick her up, but Mhane shouted, “No. If she has a head injury, we could make it worse.”
“How could we possibly make this worse?” He barked and growled when he turned her arms over.
Mhane didn’t answer. She was already sprinting away, her long brown hair doing a crazy wave that seemed to last forever, though that could just be the double vision she had going on.
Was it double vision or triple vision, she thought as she started seeing things in three?
Noah’s face wavered in front of her as she tried to ignore his floating eyes.
“What were you thinking?” he snapped the fear for her in his voice surprising her. She mumbled and his eyes widened in alarm. “Shush, try again. Slowly,” he urged.
“Mhane. T-try to kill y-you.” Her breath escaped in a pained rush because the effort to talk had her head pounding.
Thankfully, things came back into focus.
His eyes cleared and understanding entered them. “She would be right to try and kill me. I’m already dead without you.”
