“You know you are so giving me a bite of that,” I tell him as we get settled in for the fireworks.
“I figured as much. I thought you were getting the strawberry one. You were particularly drooling when she handed the lady in front of us one.”
I nod. “I thought about it, but the original ones have always been my favorite.” It’s a lame excuse, but he seems to buy it and doesn’t say any more than that.
We’re eating in silence while the sky turns darker. He finally breaks it and says, “Here.” He’s holding out a piece of his fried dough covered in sweet sugar and dripping apple filling. My mouth waters at the sight of the bite he’s holding out to me. “Come on, you know you want to.”
I lean over and take the bite into my mouth. It tastes like heaven. My teeth brush the fingers he’s holding the dough with. I moan at the taste of it as I chew and swallow.
“You missed a spot.” His eyes look hooded. The bite tasted like sugar, apples, and Derek. He holds out his fingers, waiting for me to suck the apple glaze from them.
I grin and lean back over, deep throating his fingers a little more than I need to, but I take them into my mouth, close it around them, and pull my mouth back off them of as I suck the apple up. I swear a moan escapes Derek’s lips as I do it. I know there was one coming from me.
We stare at each other. My stomach is wild with desire. I got a little bit of a hit from him, and now I want more. He’s watching me with the same intent—eyes are still wild with desire, and his mouth hanging open. There are words he wants to say; I can tell by the way his lip is trembling. But he doesn’t, at least not right away.
“Audrey.” My name comes out of his mouth and sounds all breathy and needy. I wish I had my wits about me more than I do, because I might have responded. Instead, I just swallow and watch him, waiting for him to make the next move. I feel like I’ve forced his hand a bit and made him see me as more than Aiden’s little sister. He hasn’t said a word, but a shift is happening. I can feel it in the way he just keeps staring at me.
The moment is broken when a loud boom explodes in the sky. A flash of light now illuminates Derek. I hadn’t realized they turned off the streetlights that allowed me to have such a beautiful view of this man. But they’ve replaced it with the fire in the sky. The way the pinks and blues are flashing over his dark brown hair and tanned features is making him look even more dangerous and forbidden. As if that weren’t already possible.
The fireworks eventually break the spell, and we turn to watch them. My stomach feels warm, and not just from the food. I abandon my funnel cake and can see that he has too. Instead, he’s watching the fireworks display above. He moves over closer so that our arms are touching. Music begins to play from a band that’s set up in front of us. I have no idea when that happened. But when I’m with Derek Walsh, the whole world clearly just falls away.
The fireworks play on and on. The band is playing cover songs. The one they’re playing now is “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey. I smile and begin to sway a little bit. I feel like whenever this song comes on we’re all that same small-town girl. I move my hips a bit more and bump into Derek. He looks over, eyes still hooded from our earlier exchange, and that’s when I see it—the crack in his resolve. Derek can’t hold back anymore, for whatever reason, and I don’t want him to.
He leans in, grabbing my face with his strong hands and hungrily puts his lips on mine. It takes my mind a minute to realize what is truly happening. But eventually my body catches up with my brain, and I join in on the kiss. It’s not soft at all; he’s going for it. His tongue is begging for entrance into my mouth, and I allow it, a moan escaping my mouth. My hands have a mind of their own. They take advantage of our chance to explore his hard body and how hard it is. I brush down his back and grip at his ass, then pull him closer. I can feel the hardness of his cock against me. Up his back, my hands wander, until they find their way to his neck, and I hold on for dear life as Derek continues his delicious assault on my mouth.
When we finally break apart, we’re both panting.
“Audrey.” This time, my name comes out like a prayer. His eyes widen and his body stills. Watching for a moment, and slowly breathing in and out, the reality of who he kissed sets in “I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have done that.”
“I wanted you to,” I tell him. “Please don’t apologize, and please don’t act like I’m someone you can’t have or shouldn’t be kissing.”
“That’s exactly what you are,” he says, taking a step back. “But…”
I love that last word that comes out of his mouth. It gives me hope that the next few words are going to be exactly what I’ve wanted to hear.
“I want you. I’m not sure when it started. I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve been here all week trying to write some silly songs and all I can see is you. Or if my life is just that damn hard and it needs you as a distraction.”
“I’m happy to be that distraction,” I tell him with a giggle.
He pulls me in for a hug. “That’s not fair to you.”
“What wouldn’t be fair is you not kissing me at all. I’ve wanted you to do that for so long.”
He’s smiling widely back at me now. “Really? I thought I was just your brother’s annoying friend and bandmate.”
“You definitely were, but I always thought of you as my friend, too. You have no idea how long I’ve watched you and wanted you to do just that.”
The fireworks continue above us, lighting up our faces. This feels like one of those huge moments I’m going to remember for the rest of my life. I know he might not, with all the shows he performs and moments that are going to be bigger than this in his career, but right now it doesn’t get any better than this for me.
“I had no idea.”
“Well, now you do,” I tell him. I lean back in and give his lips a quick peck because I feel like I can now. The ice has been broken, and the first kiss has been shared. Frankly, I want more, so much more. Especially, since I could feel how much he wanted me when his cock pressed against me.
“Okay” is all he says. He pulls me back into him, and we watch the fireworks display.
Our touching doesn’t stop the whole way out of the fair. I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop, and I feel like it just might on the way home in the car. But it doesn’t; at least not completely.
“We can’t tell Aiden about this,” he begins before adding. “At least not yet. Not until l figure out what’s happening here.”
