“And I thought that you had been searching for this mole?” I lean forward on the desk, crossing my arms and bracing myself. “What is the status?”
Dimitri’s face pales. “Still searching. It seems like nobody knows anything.”
“Or nobody is willing to speak.” My mouth presses together in a thin line. “There is someone amongst us who knows who the traitor is. I want them and that bastard found.”
“I think I have an idea. I’ll round them up.”
“It’s in your best interest to do it as quickly as possible.” I spin in my seat as Hazel pulls herself to her feet. Despite her ankles being tied together, she hops across the room.
She turns her back to the counter and lowers herself down. It takes her a few tries to get the cabinet open before she whirls back around and starts looking through the supplies there.
Though there is nothing in that cupboard that she can use to free herself, she keeps searching.
The little vixen is going to be more of a problem than I thought she would be.
Dimitri grins and shakes his head. “That girl is going to be more trouble than she’s worth.”
I rake my fingers through the light layer of scruff along my jaw. “You’re right about that. But nothing I can’t handle.”
Hazel’s eyebrows pull together as she kneels and slams the cupboard shut with her shoulder. She shuffles toward another cupboard on her knees.
Dimitri scoffs as she rotates and repeats the process of opening the door. “Are you sure that you don’t want to kill her? I’m sure that it would be easier than trying to get her to cooperate. We need to be smart about how we handle her.”
“She’ll cooperate.”
“With all due respect, you must be living in a dream world.” Dimitri’s smile stretches wide as he crosses his arms. His attention is glued to the screen as Hazel continues to rummage the room. “A woman like that is too wild to control. Hell, in another world if I were you, I wouldn’t want to control her. I would want to let her run wild and see where it would lead to.”
I roll my eyes. “Aren’t you the one who just suggested we should kill her?”
“From a purely tactical standpoint.” He shrugs a shoulder, interest lighting up his expression. “From a personal one, she’s pretty, smart, and feisty, the kind you marry.”
“Not happening. But you know me, I’ll get what I need from her.”
Dimitri heads to the door and smiles sheepishly. “Which is why you’re insisting on keeping her a little longer, right?”
I follow him to the door, plans for my malyshka already spinning through my mind. Dimitri may think that she is too wild to control.
I think the little vixen is nothing but my next challenge. Breaking her is going to be the most fun I’ve had all year.
“Yes.” I take one last glance as she hops back to the spot, I had left her in. “Now, I’m going to go in there and put her to work.”
“Bring the men, Dimitri.”
Chapter 7 - Hazel
My wrists are raw and red. They ache as the rope digs into them. Hopping around the room and looking for anything I could use may not have been my best idea.
It’s only caused me more pain.
There is no way that they’re going to let me leave.
I’m not going to tell them what they want to know either. I’m not going to betray the authorities.
The white lights overhead are blinding as they reflect off the plastic walls and the floor. My head pounds with the headache forming right behind my temples.
With a slow breath, I lean back against the plastic. It crumples beneath me, rustling with every movement I make.
Those cupboards were a bust, but there must be something else in here I can use. There must be a way that I can get myself out of this.
