His sinister smile was coated in blood. “We’ll see about that.” He looked like he was up to something, and I wanted nothing more than to kill him. “When you get tired of her-”
“He’s marrying her, you stupid fuck,” my father snapped. “So, when Chasin says that Jett belongs to him, that’s exactly what he means.”
“Oh, God…” Mrs. Morgan whimpered tearfully.
“I’m not going to stop until you put a bullet through your head, Thomas,” my father informed him. “If you think I’ll ever sacrifice my son’s happiness to keep your secret, then you’re a lot dumber than you look.” Patting my chest, pushing me back a bit, he added, “If you ever come near my family again, and that includes Jett, I’ll do more than just ruin you. I’ll tear you apart with my bare hands.”
“Don’t underestimate me, Randall,” Mr. Morgan warned. “When a man has nothing to lose, the stakes change.”
My father smirked down at him. “God, you really are a stupid sonofabitch.” Then his smirk turned into a grin. “This should be fun.”
Without another word, we walked out of the house, Dad’s car parked behind mine. I hadn’t expected him to show up, but I was glad that he’d had. Even though I was unconcerned with the future bloodshed that was going to blanket this clusterfuck, this was about Jett and what she was strong enough to handle. Now, while I knew that she was a lot stronger than her father was giving her credit for, it was time for someone to finally protect her at all costs.
“Thanks, Dad,” I said as we stopped in front of my car.
“I know that you probably think that I did this for the future of Carver Industries, but you’re wrong,” he said. “I’m doing this for you, and it just so happens that your future is Carver Industries.”
“Honestly, all I care about is Jett,” I told him. “I don’t care what your motives are, or even why I’m doing this. I only care that she’s safe and that she believes that I can keep her that way.”
He gave me an understanding nod. “We’re nothing if we can’t protect the women we love,” he remarked, stating the obvious. “At the end of the day, it really is about protecting what belongs to us, son.”
“Lots of people would argue that women aren’t property to be owned,” I posed.
“Well, in my household, God created Eve for Adam, and it was with the understanding that he would go to his deathbed cherishing that gift,” he replied. “Your mother belongs to me, even if I’m doing a shit job of cherishing her like I should.”
“It’s not too late to change that,” I pointed out.
“No, it’s not,” he agreed.
With nothing else to say, I got in my car, then headed back to Jett.
Chapter 28
Jett~
I wasn’t sure what time it was, but Chasin was keeping his word as I felt him rubbing my hip over the blanket, softly saying my name. “Jett, wake up, baby.”
Opening my eyes and stretching my sore body, I woke up as I sat up, leaning against the pillows and headboard. It took a second for my eyes to focus in the darkness of the room, but when they did, they noticed the strip on Chasin’s face.
I reached over, turning on the lamp on the nightstand. “What happened?”
“Your dad got a good hit in,” he replied with a smirk. “But I’m good.”
My eyes widened. “You actually fought my father? Are you insane?”
“Your father deserves worse,” he huffed.
“I’m not arguing that he deserved it, Chasin,” I sighed. “I just…” I scowled. “Why aren’t you in jail?”
He let out a lyrical laugh. “Are you really asking me that question?”
I deadpanned him. “Don’t be an ass.”
Chasin just grinned. “My father showed up.”
That piece of information nearly knocked all the breath from my lungs. “He did what?”
“He was afraid that I might kill your dad, so he showed up, trying to keep me out of prison,” he went on. “Honestly, if he hadn’t shown up, your dad would be dead right now.”
