His entire face softened. “I didn’t mean it like that, baby. My dad’s only concern is that we’re getting too serious, too young, and that’s the part that he’s going to have to deal with. He has no problem with you being here, and my mother won’t care one way or the other.”

“How can she not care?”

“My parents are hardly ever home, Jett,” he answered. “As long as I don’t knock you up before we get married, they won’t care.”

“You say that like it’s all so simple,” I murmured softly, feeling that tiredness again.

“It is,” he lied. “I just need you to trust me.”

“I’m not sure it’s in me to ever trust anyone completely, Chasin,” I said honestly. “The two people that I was supposed to be able to trust most in the world turned out to be my worst nightmares.”

“I’m not them, Jett.”

“No,” I sighed. “No, you’re not.”

“Go to sleep, baby,” he instructed. “I’ll be back later.”

“What are you going to do?” I asked again.

“Make it so that your father is never able to lift a hand to another human being again for the rest of his life,” he replied, and his words would scare a normal person. However, I wasn’t normal.

Even if I could stop Chasin from going to my parents’ house, I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to. I knew that made me a bad person, but I couldn’t help the way that I felt. I couldn’t help how I wanted my parents to pay for stealing my happiness, my childhood. I wanted my father’s reign of terror to come to an end, even if I didn’t feel anything sentimental towards my mother. Now that my shame had become public, I wanted him to feel the same awful spotlight that I felt on me right now.

“Will you wake me up when you get back?” I asked.

“Baby, you need your rest,” he replied softly.

“Please,” I begged. “I just…I need to know what he says.”

After a few seconds, Chasin nodded. “Okay,” he relented. “I’ll wake you up when I get home.”

When he went to stand up, I stopped him. “Chasin?”

“Yeah, baby?”

“Thank you.”

His brows dipped a bit. “For what?”

“For whatever you’re about to do,” I answered. “For putting in the effort like I matter.”

His blue eyes flared. “Jett, you’re the only fucking thing that matters.”

Chapter 27

Chasin~

It hadn’t been easy to leave Jett lying in my bed. As furious as I still felt, comforting her had felt more important than kicking her dad’s ass. However, I knew that I’d be no good to her if I didn’t get rid of all this anger boiling my blood. Granted, nothing would ever make it go away completely, but facing her father was going to help a lot with that.

I rang the doorbell before raining my fist on the expensive wooden door. When I had pulled up to the curb in front of the house, I’d been able to see both cars in the driveway, immediately recognizing Thomas Morgan’s car from earlier. I could only imagine how pissed off he was right now, what with Jett still ‘missing’ and all.

When the door finally swung open, Mr. Morgan stood on the other side, looking livid, then shocked to see me. His eyes quickly shifted around, presumably looking for his daughter. When he didn’t see her anywhere, he wasn’t quick enough to hide his displeasure before masking his face again, ever the good politician.

“Chasin, what a surprise again,” he said. “I take it that you weren’t able to find Jett?”

“Oh, I found her,” I replied. “I found her in the hospital after being attacked by a bunch of jealous motherfuckers.”

To his credit, his face blanched a bit. “Wh…what? She’s in the hospital?”
