“Is your pussy wet?” I nodded again. “Tell me that you need me, Jett.”

I almost started crying.

“Chasin-”

He reached out, grabbed the back of my neck, then placed his forehead against mine. “Say it,” he ordered. “Say it…please.”

Feeling the pressure behind my eyes, I gave in. “I need you, Chasin.”

His blue eyes looked troubled as he said, “If only that were the truth, baby.”

Instead of trying to convince him that I wasn’t lying, I spent the next two hours showing him with my body what I wasn’t ready to say with words, making sure to keep my shirt on.

Chapter 17

Chasin~

Though nothing had gotten resolved yesterday, something had changed between me and Jett. Something important had happened after she’d given me head for the first time, and I hadn’t even argued with her when she had begged me to drop her off a block from her house again. I needed to find out what was up with that, but that was a battle for another day. Right now, I was just happy that Jett was being agreeable.

Things were also different at school after yesterday. To my surprise, when I’d gone to pick up Jett for school this morning, she’d gotten in my car with no arguments, though she’d already been a few blocks from her house. I hadn’t bothered to do the math, so I hadn’t realized how early she had to leave her house for the walk to school. Always having had a vehicle, I hadn’t accounted for how long it took her to actually walk from her house to Carver High.

So, when I had pulled into my parking spot with Jett in the passenger seat-a place where no other girl had ever sat before-all eyes had been on us when I had opened the door for her. I had also noticed that West and Sierra had been missing from our little morning group, but I hadn’t given it much thought. Now that their friends-with-benefits status was no longer a secret, I could see them missing often, not that I cared.

Nevertheless, when David had said hi, Jett tensing next to me had been enough to make me wave but keep going. While I had no real issues with anyone, I hadn’t been lying when I’d told Jett that I had no real friends. Not hanging out with them anymore wouldn’t bother me one bit.

At any rate, with lunch over, I was on my way to the office to get Jett’s locker switched closer to mine. She was just too far from me, and it was making walking her to class a challenge. I might not get in trouble for being late to class, but it wasn’t something that I was purposely an asshole about.

“Hey, Carver!”

I turned at my name, seeing Russ Carpenter jogging my way. While I had partied with Russ a few times over the years, he’d never been a part of our group. Russ played sports, and he spent most of his time dedicating himself to working out, team practices, or the games. He also hung out with other athletes, which made sense.

“What’s up?” I asked as I stopped for him.

He looked a tad uncomfortable, but lots of people felt that way when talking to me. My last name might open a lot of doors, but it also closed a lot of them. In a different world, I might have been actual friends with some of these people, but I lived in this world, and this world was unforgiving.

“Look, it’s none of my business, but…”

“Just spit it out, Carpenter,” I told him, used to people having my name in their mouths.

“I don’t know the details, but whatever happened yesterday, West Oliver and Sierra Frechere are talking some real shit.”

“About?”

He grimaced. “Sierra’s just being a jealous girl…you know, just being a woman scorned and all. Saying stupid shit like Jett not being special.”

“I figured,” I said, shrugging a shoulder. “Guys don’t fuck Sierra because she’s classy.”

Russ winced at that bit of harsh truth. “Yeah, I guess.”

“Besides, Jett can hold her own,” I assured him.

“Well, it’s more than that,” he went on. “We had a late practice last night, and when I was done organizing the batting cages, I walked into the locker room and overheard a couple of the guys talking.”

My back immediately straightened. “Be sure that your next words are the truth, Carpenter,” I warned him. “I have no problem ruining someone’s life, but if I do it because you’re lying, there’s nowhere that you’ll be able to hide from me.”

“I can only tell you what I heard,” he replied, choosing to ignore my warning. “Now, if they were telling the truth, I can’t speak on that.”

“Fine,” I sighed. “What did you overhear?”
