“Why do you think she’s damaged and not sick?” It wasn’t easy keeping my voice calm while I was trying not to suffocate Frankie with my pheromones until she told me everything.

“The doctors told us that she settled into her designation way too early. Because of that, her pheromones are almost nonexistent. She didn’t have the time to fully develop before settling and one of the side effects is she doesn’t react to any pheromones. None. Even a beta has more of a response than she does.” Frankie shook her head and looked away from me, clearly bothered by that. “Not even recessive omegas react like that, Liam.”

Interesting.

I released Frankie and slipped my hands into my pockets as I considered how I was going to handle this.

“You keep saying she’s not your omega, but she is under your care.” It was oddly relieving when she looked at me again. “Your scent is on her clothes and her wrists, but not her neck.”

“As she told you, we only have a platonic bond,” Frankie confirmed, shifting her weight from one foot to the other nervously. “She’s my family.”

“Which is why I’m asking for your permission to help her.” Why I was even bothering to ask was beyond me, but Lucy wouldn’t like it if I forced Frankie into obeying and who knew how far her relationship with the Lopez pack really went. “Let me call the Valor pack doctor and have him take a look at her. Give me access to her medical files, and stay with us at my house in the city to help her feel safe in a new environment. Your presence is a comfort to her, and I don’t want to take that away.”

Maybe I was revealing too much of my hand so early in the game, but Frankie was an alpha. She’d understand why I felt the need to take care of an omega better than anyone, even if I’d never particularly cared about omegas before.

None of them had ever captivated me the way Daphne had.

Lucy.

“What’s your motive?” Frankie raised her eyebrow in a subtle challenge. “Who is she to you?”

For a brief moment, I wondered if she knew about our history, but there was nothing to indicate Lucy had ever told her anything about me. It was extremely unlikely Frankie knew about the little boy who’d played with Lucy before everything had gone to shit.

That was more agonizing to realize than I cared to admit.

“Lucy Parker is no one.” It was physically painful to say that, but I didn’t want Frankie getting even more suspicious. “She’s a sick omega who works for me and she can’t do her job if she’s not healthy, can she?”

Her eyes narrowed and she was clearly distrustful, but she decided not to interrogate me on the matter. “Fine, let’s say that’s your motive. How can I trust you not to take advantage of her when you seem to be the only one on this planet who can scent her?”

I wasn’t the only one, but it was probably a good idea to keep that to myself for now.

“I’m a legacy alpha,” I reminded her. “Even a scent like hers won’t make me lose control.”

Although it had been a close call. If Cassius hadn’t gotten there when he had…

“Besides, she has a gun. She’ll just shoot me if I do something she doesn’t like.” I smiled down at Frankie, hoping she’d take it as reassuring rather than threatening. “I have no intention of doing anything she doesn’t want me to do.”

“Fine.” Frankie turned and headed for the elevator. “But if she tells me otherwise…”

The smile on my face dropped. “Then you have my permission to kill me.”

If I didn’t kill myself first for hurting her.

My entire life…

I existed solely for her. If anything about me displeased her, then I’d fix it or remove it entirely. Whatever she wanted.

My entire life was hers to command and I couldn’t help but wonder how long it would take for Lucy to figure that out.

CHAPTER 15

Cassius

Black currants and dark roses filled my nose until there was nothing left. Only the weight of the omega in my arms who slept so deeply she hadn’t noticed that Liam wasn’t the one holding her anymore. She trusted me to keep her safe when she was at her most vulnerable.

Whether she knew it or not.

Being able to care for her eased some of those raging instincts her pheromones induced – instincts I’d spent most of my life squashing until they didn’t exist, but for her…
