But why would I feel that way about this asshole who was laughing at me?
“Your nose is something else,” Liam finally said, wiping his eyes one last time before sitting back to study me. “Even Cassius can’t scent me with these things on.”
I decided not to respond to that and kicked at Frankie’s leg for her to get on with it all before going back to my sketch.
“Right.” She was clearly not happy about this, but what could we do? This case was huge. Neither of us wanted to give up on it. “If that’s everything, I’d like to get started by interviewing everyone who was here last night after-hours while Lou gets a look at the servers.”
Frankie went to stand, but Liam Valor flattened his palm on the table and this time we both froze. It was such a subtle movement that was barely more than a suggestion – and an extremely vague one at that.
I had no idea what it meant, but I did know I’d fucking wait as long as I needed to until he told me whatever it was he wanted, and that pissed me off even more than Cassius questioning what my purpose as an omega was at my agency.
“I’m not sure what you two know about me, but I like to oversee my projects personally,” Liam explained. His deep voice was softer now, more than I felt like it should be when it practically made the air around him vibrate. “And I have no plans to give you access to anything until I understand your process.”
Well, it looked like we might have the job, but we definitely didn’t have his trust.
Trust had to be earned, and I had every intention of getting it. We’d close this case in record time, and solidify our position within the agency.
It didn’t matter what he, or anyone else thought, omegas could solve murders.
CHAPTER 6
Lucy
Frankie looked at me and I kept my eyes on the sketchpad as I worked so I didn’t have to think too much about the way Valor and Cassius were watching her now – not me.
I cleared my throat and refocused on the task at hand. “Do you want us to work independently of the police, or would you like us to share our findings with them?”
“You’re working for Valor, not the police,” Liam reminded us. “But if you need to work with them to get us the results we want faster, then so be it.”
That made things a thousand times easier.
“All right.” I set down my pencil and gave Liam my full attention since that’s what people usually preferred when someone was speaking to them. “My partner and I will privately discuss our findings from this interview and ensure we’re on the same page. Then we will spend the first day narrowing down the list of suspects while trying to get access to the body and the crime scene. If we can get access to those, we’ll deal with that first.”
That was the best-case scenario though. Unless we were working with the police, they usually shafted us when it came to things like that. Every once in a while, a contact could make an exception for us, but that was few and far between.
We couldn’t rely on that method in this case when so many eyes would be watching us.
“Once we have a better idea of what happened, Frankie will question everyone on my list as well as those who were here during the time of the murder. Since time is of the essence, she’ll record each and every one of them so I can listen to them later. While she’s doing that, I’ll be going through all the files on the Valor computers that you’ll let me have access to.”
Liam shared a look with Cassius when I started jiggling my leg again. “We can get you access to both the body and the crime scene today.”
“Could you also order a separate autopsy done by a third party?” Frankie asked, typing more notes into her tablet. “It’s always a good idea in case whoever did this has the money and power to pay off the police.”
It was Cassius who nodded this time, tapping his own tablet just as furiously as Frankie.
“That sounds like a good start,” Liam said, his eyes narrowing slightly.
What the fuck was it now? This guy kept making problems, and for what? Maybe I was wrong and he really was the murderer making my life more difficult than it needed to be.
“But there’s no way I’m letting either of you run around unsupervised. Either I, or Cassius, will be with you at all times until this is solved.”
Fuck me sideways. Why were the rich ones always like this? They had an awful tendency to micromanage and it was exhausting. Not just that, but it slowed us down.
“We’re an armed agency,” Frankie reminded him. “We don’t need you following us around.”
“It’s not for your safety.” Those garnet eyes glittered dangerously at my partner. “It’s for the safety of my pack and territory.”
Meaning he really didn’t trust us.
