“We need to push them; they are waiting for something,” said Benny. “Vasquez would not just fall back without a plan. He has something planned for extraction.”
“But between them and us is a lot of men,” I replied, looking out into the corridor. “Alright, I got an idea, but this might kill us,”
Benny chuckled, “We survived the stunt we pulled against the Carlos brothers all those years ago. I think this will be a piece of cake.”
I laughed and looked over at Benny, “I’m sorry...”
“Save it, you’re just a lovestruck fucker… But you’re still my family. I was worried and I didn’t handle things well either. So, save it, and let’s get her out of there.” I was relieved that he was willing to help me save Maria – I was worried sick about her, and even amidst this fight between families, I kept thinking about her.
I nodded, pointed my pistols out of the corner, and fired up at the roof. I kept shooting until I hit the first light, and then I moved to the next, hitting it and then the one right above the men in the corridor. As soon as the lights went out, the room was plunged into darkness and Benny rushed forward. My guns were out of bullets, so I made a beeline for the corridor as Benny fired right into it, getting the men to fall back.
I jumped in headfirst, tackling down one of the men and ripping his pistol out of his hands. I turned it on him and fired right in his neck before turning to shoot at the others who were falling back. Someone got hit in the neck, and he let out a scream before falling down the stairs. There weren’t as many men as I had thought, apparently, Vasquez had only brought those that he needed for the job of killing me.
Someone grabbed me from behind and got me in a chokehold. I tried to spin the gun around and fire on him, but another man smacked it out of my hands and aimed his own gun to fire at me. I jumped and put my feet against the wall, pushing myself off it, while the other man held onto me. The momentum caused me to turn around, exposing the man who held me back to the gunshot. The bullet hit him, and I held up his body, driving him backward and into the man who had fired.
All three of us crashed through the door and I rolled over, driving the heel of my boot into the neck of the man with the gun before taking it away from him. He began wheezing, unable to breathe, and I fired two shots into his chest and one into the chest of the other. I turned around to see Benny bash the skull of a man into the firehose on the wall, knocking him out cold. As we stepped out into the corridor, we heard a loud bang, one that shook the building to its core, and we exchanged a glance.
“Vasquez.”
We rushed down through the stairs and peered out into the corridor. Benny was a little too far ahead and jumped right into the line of fire. I heard the shots and dived at him from behind, tackling him to the ground before pulling him back into cover. He swore as he looked at his arm, seeing where a bullet had grazed him, I looked at the wound and determined that it was just a graze, and I smiled at him, “You’ve seen worse, get it together.”
“They’re making a run for it!” Benny yelled, pointing back at the corridor. “There is a car on the other side, it broke through the basement.”
I wanted to look around the corner, but with the men that close, I knew they were waiting for us to slip. I heard one of them grabbing Maria, and I had to physically restrain myself from jumping out into the line of fire. She seemed to be struggling as they carried her along. I had to get her away from Vasquez and Leonardo as quickly as possible; otherwise, if they got another chance, they would kill her.
“Stay back and make sure you kill him. That is what you want, yeah? Then fucking have it!” I heard Vasquez say to someone, just before Maria’s voice vanished into the distance.
Benny picked up a large rock and threw it into the corridor, drawing shots from the men. The moment it died down, he put his gun around the corner and fired back, hitting three men in the leg and another in the gut. I followed behind him and fired at the men he had downed, finishing them off as I moved along. At the end of the corridor was a large hole where Leonardo and the other men had just crawled out of.
We began hearing gunshots outside it as we reached the hole, but they were not aimed at us. Vasquez’s men were now shooting at someone else. I peered through and saw four vehicles that had now arrived at the scene, and with a closer look, I realized that it was the rest of my family. Somehow Fisher and the rest of the crew had arrived, and they were taking the fight to them, keeping them locked in the compound.
“Angelo! Over there!” Benny called to me, pointing at Vasquez and Leonardo as they dragged Maria with them.
I picked up a new gun from a body on the floor and checked the magazine, seeing that only two shots had been fired from it. I didn’t care that I was in bad shape. My face hurt from the blows I had taken, my gut hurt from the previous gunshot wound, and I had more than my fair share of scrapes and bruises. But Vasquez and Leonardo had gone for the person I cared about the most, and they were going to pay with their lives.
CHAPTERTWENTY-EIGHT
Angelo
Benny and I chased after them, seeing that they were heading back around to the part of the building which I had not seen. There were four cars on the far side, and I recognized the white Porsche as the one that Vasquez drove. As we rounded the corner, something made contact with my face, throwing me to the ground. I looked up just in time to see Leonardo bring his boot down to kick me. I rolled to the side as Benny pulled his gun to fire, but another one of Vasquez’s men smacked his arm with an umbrella, causing him to drop the gun.
I grabbed the foot of the man with the umbrella and shoved him backward, throwing him off balance. He fell against the building wall, and I got back to my feet. Behind me, Benny and Leonardo struggled to control the weapon while I put my hands up against the man who held the umbrella. He swung it at me, and I ducked low, following with a driving punch to his gut. He recoiled and fell back, jabbing the umbrella at me as he did.
It hit right where I had been shot and I recoiled in pain, clutching at my midsection. Realizing I had been injured, the man swung the umbrella at my head, and I blocked it with a single arm. This gave the man the opening he needed to follow through with a blow of his own to my stomach. The pain was horrible, dropping me to my knees. The man drove a knee into the side of my face, and I fell to the ground, stunned. I saw Benny being held in a chokehold by Leonardo and I began wondering where Maria was. I had not seen her or Vasquez, and I couldn’t help but imagine the worst.
I turned just as the man approached and kicked against his knee with all the force I could muster, and the man buckled to one leg, grabbing his knee. As he did, I got back to my feet and followed through with an uppercut, sending him wobbling backward on spaghetti legs. I yelled and ran right at the man, throwing my body right at him and driving him into the building wall. He slammed hard against the wall and fell limp in my arms.
I tossed him to the ground and turned around to see the Porsche as it began driving past us. I rushed towards it, only for Vasquez to put his hand out the driver’s side seat and fire his gun right at me. The bullet hit, sending me backward. I felt the blood rush up my throat as I coughed it up. Still on my feet, I watched in shock as Maria grabbed the steering from him and yanked it hard to the side, sending the vehicle right into the wall in front of them.
I fell to the ground, feeling excruciating pain in my chest. I was not certain where I had been hit, but it hurt more than I could describe. I turned to see Leonardo and Benny still fighting for the gun on the floor in front of them. Benny threw his head backward and caught Leonardo across the bridge of his nose, causing him to let go. He reached for the gun, but accidentally kicked it away instead. Benny turned around to face Leonardo and both men brought their hands up, ready to fight.
“You fucking snake! We ate at the same table! How could you?” Benny yelled as I watched.
“You don’t deserve shit, Benny! You were there too when the Prestons ruined my life! All of you have to pay. Every single one of you!”
He ran straight at Benny, throwing two right jabs, trying to catch Benny as he danced backward, away from the blows. Leonardo followed with a kick that caught Benny square in the chest, knocking the air out of him. Benny stumbled a little but stood his ground and decided to return the offense. He got low and swung his foot, trying to get Leonardo off his feet, but Leonardo jumped backward.
Benny rushed at him with a lunging right hook. Leonardo blocked, but Benny saw where his sniper round had hit the man, and he grabbed it with his other free arm, squeezing the open wound as tightly as he could. Leonardo screamed in pain and struck Benny with a headbutt, causing Benny to let go. But he was not done; he rushed back in and landed a right hook across his face and another blow right to the wound in his arm. Leonardo screamed again and pushed Benny back, knowing that the pain was becoming more intense than he could handle.
