“Oh!”
“Would you want me to be there?”
“I don't think it would be a good idea. The head of the Russian mafia would draw a lot of attention and my family wouldn't let you leave here alive.”
“Do you think they are that powerful?”
“We are!” I puffed out my chest even though he wasn't seeing me. If there was one thing I didn't doubt, it was the strength of my family.
“They would fear me greatly if they knew what I was capable of.”
“Is this a threat?”
“I wouldn't threaten you.”
I was on the edge of panic and excitement as I listened to him on the other end of the line. The fear was balanced with the need to continue feeling what his voice provoked in me.
“So, what do you want from me?”
“I’ve already told you. Get to know you better.”
“We shouldn’t...”
“Maybe not, but what do you want?”
“I should be afraid of you.”
“It is prudent that you are.”
“But I like hearing your voice,” confessing that made me even more panicked. If anyone in my family even imagined that I was flirting with the head of the Russian mafia over the phone, I wouldn't even want to imagine what could happen to me.
“I like hearing yours too.”
I shuddered as my mind flooded with the only image I had of him. A tall, blond man with piercing blue eyes.
I should hang up, but I had already gone too far.
“Pietra!” Perla started knocking on my bedroom door for me to open it. “Pietra! They're all waiting for you downstairs.”
“I'm on my way!” I shouted back to my sister and then turned to the phone. “I need to hang up.”
“We'll talk again.”
I didn't respond, just ended the call. It was crazy, but I wanted him to call me again. I was committing a very dangerous insanity and had no idea of the risks.
I threw my cell phone on the furniture, but I pulled it back and hurried to erase the call record, even though I thought that wasn't enough to hide the information from someone like Uncle Mateo, however, I felt safer that way.
I rubbed the cold sweat from my hands on my sides and opened the door. Seeing my sister standing in the hallway, looking at me with a sour face. I smiled and twirled my hair.
“Hey!”
“What is it?”
“Nothing.” I tried to hide it.
“It looks like you just saw a ghost.”
“Maybe that was it.” I told Perla everything, but that time I didn't even know where to start. It was better to keep that information to myself, at least for now.
