Something lies deep in his gaze, an uncertainty I don’t want to see there, before he drops a kiss on my forehead. “The board meeting is in two days.”

“I know.”

“We should head into the city tomorrow and get ready.”

I bite my lip and nod.

The fear and doubt in his words and the thought of him having to return there is like a bucket of ice water being dumped over my sweat-slicked body. I shiver and press against him more closely, and he wraps his arm around my back, keeping me pinned to him.

“We can do this, Silas.Youcan. I promise.”

I never thought I would survive what happened that sent my world crashing down, but I somehow did—and it brought me to him. Through something horrific, I was given this man who cares more than he will ever admit, who wants nothing more than to protect me.

Even after the terrifying interaction with his uncle, I know I would never go back. I would never change my decision to come up here now that I’ve finally gotten through to Silas.

But there’s a tempest brewing on the horizon—dark, sinister, billowing clouds that threaten to unleash a torrent on us.

I hope we’re strong enough to survive because I’ve already promised him we are. And I never break my promises.

ChapterFourteen

LYLA

Ipace the length of the floor-to-ceiling windows that create one entire wall of our hotel suite, casting quick glances toward the closed bedroom door while I wait for my phone call to connect. If Silas comes out and overhears any of this, it will create a whole heap of questions and stress he doesn’t need right now.

It was uncomfortable enough for him when we checked in and the manager realized who he was and upgraded us to the penthouse, against Silas’ protests that we just wanted the room we had booked this morning.

He doesn’t want to be recognized. He doesn’t want the attention. And he’s about to be thrust into the spotlight again.

I’d be nervous, too.

Someone finally picks up the call, and I watch the door even more carefully to ensure he’s still safely out of earshot. “Attorney Fields’s office.”

“Hi, this is Lyla Sinclair calling.”

“Oh, Lyla.” His assistant jostles her phone. “Good timing. He just walked in from court. Let me connect you with him.”

“Great, thank you.”

I chew on my nail as I return on the same path while trying to keep an eye on the bedroom. Normally, I’m not a pacer, but I haven’t been able to sit still since we got into town. Silas’ anxiety matches my own, not only because of what we face at the board meeting but also because I need an update and need to get it without Silas overhearing anything.

“Lyla, so glad you called.” Attorney Fields’ familiar voice floats through the line. “I only have a minute before I have to jump onto a conference call, but I do have a little bit of an update for you.”

My steps falter, and I stand still for the first time today. “You do?”

“Yes. I spoke to a few people, did a little digging since we last spoke, and I think there’s a potential for a quick motion on a few important issues.”

I hold my breath for a moment, his words bringing a flicker of hope. “Really?”

“Yes.”

“But you said it could take months.”

Papers rustle in the background, and I can picture his large desk covered in various files like it was when I met with him in person before coming up here. “I’m not saying it won’t, but there are things I can file, tactics we can try that can move things quicker.”

“Oh, thank God.” A little bit of tension releases from my chest. “That’s amazing news.”

“I’m still waiting on some paperwork I need to make a final call on that, but I’ll file right away if everything lines up.”
