Check and check.

My phone lit up on the counter with a text from Gray letting me know he was on the way to my room. We probably could’ve shared a room, but now that we were going out, I was glad I had my own. Ireallydidn’t need to see him hooking up with someone.

I responded with a thumbs up and walked back into the main room to put my shoes on. I would probably regret the four-inch black heels by the end of the night, but they made my ass look phenomenal.Worth it.

Grabbing my clutch, I started to slide my phone in when the blue light blinked, reminding me of the unread messages.

I sucked a deep breath. Steeling myself, I clicked on the message icon. Five unread.

Clicking on Asher’s name, I read them quickly. The messages had become fewer and further between. My gut clenched. Maybe he was giving up.

Asher

Please call me.

Asher

Haley. I miss you.

Asher

Give me a chance to explain.

Asher

You’re being a stubborn ass.

That one made me laugh.

Asher

You’re killing me.

And just like that, my well-constructed walls cracked. I was killing myself, too. But I needed to make sure I could survive going back to just friends. That I could survive seeing him with someone else.

Haley

I’m in Vegas for work, but can we talk when I get back?

I chewed on my bottom lip and hit send. His response was immediate.

Asher

Any place, any time.

My heart fluttered. Stupid heart. I was going to have to fix that.

Asher

I miss you.

Swoon.

Haley

I miss you too.

“You about ready in there?” Gray called through the door, followed by three quick knocks.
