“Of course. But since that day is out, would you like to attend the parade with me on Saturday?”
“That sounds like fun.”
“There’s one catch.”
“What’s that?”
I grinned. “You’ll have to pass out some candy.”
“What?” Her head cocked to the side.
“I have to be in the parade, but I can have someone ride with me to toss candy. What do you say? Are you up for it?” I held my breath, hoping she’d say yes. It would be so much more fun with her sitting next to me. I had already promised the Captain I’d do it. It was something I volunteered for since I started with the force.
Her face lit up. “I think I could handle that. Who normally rides with you?”
“Either my sister or my mom.”
She chewed her bottom lip again. “Will they be upset if I go instead? I can meet up with you afterward?” She seemed genuinely concerned. I never had a girl worry about my family. Not that I gave many the time of day, but even girls I hooked up with more than once wanted all of my attention and got pissed when I chose family over them.
“Nope. This is exactly where you belong. Afterward, we can have our second date.”
“That sounds perfect.”
I slid my hand behind the back of her head and leaned closer. I wanted to tug on her ponytail, to angle her head just right, but I refrained. “Is it okay if I kiss you?”
Our lips were only a breath apart, but I waited for her permission. “Please,” She whispered, and I brushed our mouths together. I intended for it to be a short, sweet kiss, but those plans went right out the window the moment her tongue teased my lips. A growl tore from the back of my throat as I deepened the kiss. Reluctantly, I pulled back. Turned on further by the sight of her red and swollen lips.
I touched my forehead to hers. “You make my heart race,” I murmured and grazed my lips over hers one more time.
“Same, Cam. Same.”
CHAPTER FOURTEEN
STEPHANIE
“I need help,”I said into the phone as soon as Haley picked up. I’d been freaking out about this date for an entire week. I didn’t know why. I had already gone out with the man once and kissed him three times. Not that I had been counting. But I hadn’t seen him all week, and I was second-guessing everything.
What if he didn’t approve of what I wore?
What if I wasn’t good enough to be seen with him in the parade?
What if he changed his mind?
I was driving myself crazy. And I knew it was crazy, which was the crazy thing.
“Could you clarify that statement because there are so many different ways it could go?” Haley mumbled into the phone.
“Are you eating right now?” I asked as I stared at the two outfits laying on my bed. I’d been staring at them for the past thirty minutes and Cam was supposed to pick me up at any second.
“I’m watching a movie.”
“So, popcorn.” I picked up the white dress, inspecting it.
She crunched on another mouthful. “Yes.”
“Is that moaning?” I asked when the background noise got louder.
“I never said what kind of movie I was watching,” she said, and I could practically hear her eyebrows wiggling.
