“I’ll call her. See you tonight, Kikki.”
“Don’t call me...” I don’t finish the sentence, because he’s already ended the call. “Okay, bye then.”
I fling the phone onto my bed and wander over to my wardrobe to find my cutest dress.
No brainer, right?
Anything blue.
With blow-dried hair, a fresh face of makeup, and a light spray of perfume, I’m ready to join Lewis for our bus ride into town. The caramel color of my wedge sandals and clutch purse perfectly accent the cerulean blue of my dress.
I say goodbye to my parents before skipping out the front door.
Lewis lets out a whistle as he walks down my front path. “You look great.”
I clutch my chest, blushing. “Oh my gosh, really?”
“Sure. Parker won’t be able to take his eyes off you.”
My bliss decreases. Does he only care about Parker not looking at his girlfriend?
“Are you okay?”
I snap out of my thoughts. “Yeah.”
“Looked like you were frowning.”
“Oh, no, I’m okay.”
We set off down the sidewalk and Lewis says, “I know what’s got you down.”
How could he possibly?
“It’s Parker, isn’t it?” Lewis asks.
“Huh?”
“You’re peeved he’s not taking you to Alto Burger tonight,” Lewis guesses. “I totally get it. It’s date night. You’d want your boyfriend by your side.”
I tilt my head, making sure he catches my smile. “It’s okay because I have good company with me.”
“Well, thanks. Why haven’t we hung out before?” Lewis asks. “I mean, we live next door to each other.”
It takes me off guard, and I almost trip over my own foot. I let out a nervous laugh, and reply, “Yeah, that’s what I was thinking.”
“I guess it took you dating my best friend to make it happen.”
“Yeah, I guess.”
“I think it’s worked out for the best, don’t you? Not only does Yvie want to double date, but she also wants to replace her friend who left town.”
Repulsion fills my veins. “I’m nothing like Camila.”
Lewis raises his palms defensively. “Oh, I know. I mean, she wants to upgrade her friendship.”
“Oh.” I blush. “Thanks.”
A breathy laugh sings out of him. “No problem.”
