“Oh man, Green, you can’t be serious,” he says in disbelief. “It’s a beautiful day. The water isn’t cold.”

“I just don’t do open water,” I defend. “I swim laps at the town pool. It’s heated.”

He pulls on a lock of my hair. “Who knew you were so precious?”

“I’m just unaccustomed.”

“Ha. That’s one way to put it.”

“Hey, lovebirds!” Jamie calls through cupped hands.

I double take once I realize she’s talking to us.

She waves us over. “Are you going to join us or just keep flirting?”

Flirting? Us? Me and Parker?

Umm... No.

“Coming!” Parker calls back.

I give him a questioning look, and he replies with a shrug. “Apparently we can pull off being a couple without even trying,” he says.

“Umm, yeah.” I fake a laugh. “I guess so.”

Parker hoists me against him and I toss my arms around his neck as my legs wrap around his hips. My eyeline is a little higher than his, and it feels weird looking down at him.

“Ah, what are you doing?” I murmur. “Everyone already believes we’re together.”

Parker smiles and sunlight dazzles against his brown eyes. “Yeah, I know.”

With the surrounding noises muted against the calming sounds of the water, we stare at each other for a beat too long. The way his smile highlights his face, along with his unwavering eye contact, fills me with a desire I don’t understand.

This moment is perfect, but the guy isn’t.

Something in the way his jaw flexes sends an extra zing through my heart. I know he feels the same way I do. We’re putting on a show in order to gain the attention of the people we really want. So, if I’m thinking about doing this, he must be too. Right?

I trace my fingertips against his jaw and take note of the pout in his lips.

Okay. Here goes nothing.

I lean in, angling my head, and press my lips over his pout. He kisses me back and I relax against him. He holds me in the water, and I want to hate how normal this feels.

Why did I choose to kiss him? We’d done enough to prove we were together. This is so unnecessary.

I run my hands through his hair, kissing him harder.

In the back of my mind, I focus on where Lewis might be. How good is his view of this? Is he wishing he’s in Parker’s position?

Is he dying of jealousy?

Before I can delve further into fantasyland, and turn Parker into Lewis, Parker pulls back. The spell is broken and I blink at the blushing boy.

“Dang,” he whispers.

I wipe my mouth. “Sorry.”

“Don’t be.”
