I mumble, “I need to go to bed,” and get inside before anyone can stop me.
“Come on kids,” the parents’ voices blur together outside my tent. “Time to get back to bed.”
They coax everyone back inside their tents after some mild protests. My gut spasms as I stare at the empty bed beside me. I shut my eyes before I conjure up ugly scenes happening in Parker and Lewis’s tent.
Are they talking things out?
Is Parker admitting any fault?
Is Lewis regretting walking away from Yvie?
I roll over, sweating in my sleeping bag.
Jamie and Tabitha’s faces come into mind. They already had so many questions for me.
Ugh.
I hate that everyone will be talking about this in the morning.
Thirty
Oof. My head.
I sit up, groggily waking up, with the worst headache.
I leave the tent and zombie my way to the camp bathroom to feel more alive.
Before I reach for the zippered door, Lewis walks out.
“Oh, Lewis,” I say, stumbling backward. “How are you?”
He blows out a breath, rubbing his forehead. “Okay, I guess. Would’ve been better if I didn’t spend last night breaking up with my girlfriend in front of everyone.”
“Was that really it? You and Yvette are over?”
He nods. “It’s too much work. I can’t keep doing it.”
