I shrug. “I think I’ve had my fill of being adventurous for one week.”

His eyebrows wiggle. “It’s been quite a week, huh?”

“Mm-hmm.” I glance over his shoulder. “Where’s Yvette and Lewis? When I left, she seemed to be glued to your side.”

Parker chews his lip and looks away. “Well, as you can probably guess, Lewis didn’t love the fact she was showing me more attention.” He sighs and gestures at the trail. “They fell behind when the arguing set in.”

My chest constricts as I laser focus on the trail. “They’re fighting?”

“It’s almost over,” Parker whispers.

I look back at him as he slinks away.

Once everything’s ready for dinner, we place the platters on a plastic folding table and everyone serves themselves. As we eat, Yvette and Lewis still haven’t returned.

“Should someone go looking for them?” Tyler’s mom asks, nudging her husband. “It’s getting dark.”

“Finish up eating, boys,” Kai’s dad says, “and then we’ll search for them.”

Once the boys dump their plates, I help with cleaning up. When we’re almost done, Tyler and Kai hurry back to camp.

“Umm, we found them,” Kai says in a low tone.

“What is it?” Tabitha asks. “Are they okay?”

Kai bursts out laughing. “Ah, yeah. They were, uh, making up.”

“Eww,” Tabitha retches.

Tyler laughs, patting Tabitha’s shoulder. “At least you didn’t walk in on it.”

It? What doesitmean?

I shake it off and move toward a log by the fire. On the way, I pass Milo, who’s lying in a sleeping bag and reading.

“Good book?” I ask, taking a seat.

He lowers it and fixes his glasses. “It’s all right. It’s the third in the series, and I don’t particularly like the change to the main character. It’s jarring.”

“Oh, that’s a shame.”

Before we can continue the conversation, Jamie makes her way over and slides herself into Milo’s sleeping bag. The two giggle as they cuddle up together, and I can’t help becoming goo.

So dang cute.

As the others make their way over to the fire, Jamie’s head rests on Milo’s chest as he continues to read.

“Only my brother could have his head in a book while we’re out here,” Kai says, walking over with Tabitha.

“He’s avoiding the new round of truth or dare,” Tyler adds, taking a seat near me.

Parker laughs, sitting on my other side. “Reading a book ain’t gonna save him.”

I smile and pat Parker’s knee. “Give him a break.”

Parker smiles, slouching beside me.

Yvette’s giggle reaches the group before she does. Emerging from the darkness, she hurries forward, arms linked with Lewis. His face is pinkish and there’s mischief in his grin.
