I rub my chest. “He’s so down.”

Parker rubs his forehead. “Ugh. I feel so bad.”

“It’s not your fault that Yvie treated him this way.”

“I’m still getting between them. I wish he’d never gotten with her so I didn’t have to break them up.”

I cross my fingers. “It’ll be worth it. Won’t it?”

He smiles weakly. “Totally.”

I reach for the door handle, watching Lewis open his front gate.

“Maybe he needs some perking up,” Parker suggests and pats my knee. “This could be your cue to get even closer to him.”

I chew on my bottom lip.

“Go for it, Green. It’ll make up for Yvie putting him in such a bad mood.” Parker grins with encouragement. “Get your guy.”

I suck in a breath. “Really?”

He nods emphatically.

I open the car door. “Wish me luck.”

He winks. “You don’t need it.”

I leave the car and wave Parker off.

Without giving myself a chance to back out, I leave the bunny on the path to my house, and jog toward Lewis’s front gate. “Hey, wait up.”

Lewis stops on the path to his front door, turning my way.

I pace down the path and stop in front of him, “Umm.” I awkwardly shift my weight. “I just wanted to check if you’re okay.”

His smile is miniscule. “Yeah, absolutely.”

“It’s okay not to be. I’m here to talk.” I fidget, digging the toe of my sneakers into the stone. “You know, if you need it.”

“Really?”

I clasp my hands together, standing taller. “Yes.”

“You probably don’t want to hear it.”

“If that were true, I wouldn’t be standing here.”

His body language relaxes. “Okay, but I don’t want to ruin your friendship with Yvie.”

Umm, what? “It’s okay. Tell me.”

He sighs. “Yvie thinks me and Parker are fighting over you.”

The wind is knocked out of me. “Me?”

“I know, it’s crazy. I don’t know how I’m supposed to convince her that I’m into her.”

Is Parker right? Is there really a layer of insecurity to Yvette?
