“Well you did dip me.” I whack his arm. “Why did you dip me?”

“I thought Lewis was in the car.”

I groan. “Well he wasn’t. Seriously, we need to stop kissing.”

“It’s fake with us.”

“No one sees it as fake.” My face grows hot again, and I snatch the leash from Parker. “And it doesn’t feel fake.”

“I was making a scene on purpose. I wanted him to take notice.”

“Look, just stop kissing me,” I say, backtracking with Brandy. “I mean it. Tonight at the fair, absolutely no kissing.”

He steps forward. “But it’s a date.”

“I don’t care. I don’t want to kiss you.”

Parker huffs, throwing his hand in the air. “Fine. I’ll just ignore you and focus on complimenting Yvie all night.”

I turn my back on him and tug Brandy down our front path. “Sounds perfect to me.”

I hear the click of Parker’s car locks and then the opening of the car door.

“Bye Brandy,” he calls out before closing the door behind him.

“Ugh.” I pull on her leash as I turn the front door knob. “Come on, girl. Let’s get inside.”

Sixteen

Oh boy. It’s time forthe fair.

Ever since walking off on Parker, I’ve been left with a lingering bad feeling about tonight.

I fix my hair in front of the full-length mirror. I pin back the front, letting the rest fall in waves over my shoulders. I’m wearing a navy dress, which has spaghetti straps and falls above my knees. My chest felt bare, so I picked out a necklace with a circular sapphire pendant. I finish the outfit with a denim jacket and pair of white sneakers.

With hope, I peer out my bedroom window in search of Lewis at his desk. Sadly, he hasn’t returned home all day. My heart sinks with the heavy weight of knowing he’s spent so much extra time with Yvie.
