Parker is quick to nod. “Yes, sir. Tyler and Kai’s parents camp with us.”
Dad chuckles. “I love when this kid calls me sir.”
Parker wiggles his eyebrows. “Does that mean Kylie can go?”
“We’ll have to chat with the parents that are going,” Mom says.
“Please don’t be lame,” I complain. “Will you say anything embarrassing to them?”
Mom gives me a puzzled look. “Like what?”
“I dunno. Just don’t make me sound like a scaredy-cat who will be a total camping failure.”
Parker smirks. “Don’t worry. Milo’s going, so he’s got that covered.”
“Just how many boys are going on this trip?” Dad asks, scrutiny squinting his eyes.
“Five,” Parker replies. “Four girls.”
“Maybe five girls if I can convince Josie to come,” I add.
“That’s a tall order,” Mom says. “You getting adventurous is one thing, but Josie?”
I shrug. “She might like sitting by a campfire and making s’mores.”
Mom smiles. “Yes, she might.”
“Can you guys just say yes?” I ask, giving them my best puppy-dog eyes.
Mom and Dad both awe at me. Dad looks at Mom, saying, “There will be two sets of parents.”
“Your parents aren’t going, Parker?” Mom asks.
Parker shakes his head. “No, they’re too busy.”
“We’ll have to take time to go over and visit them,” Mom says to Dad. “Seeing as our kids are becoming so close.”
I gulp. “No, you don’t have to do that.”
Mom sighs. “Kikki, will you stop panicking about us embarrassing you.”
“It’s not that,” Parker cuts in. “It’s just that they’re so busy. Umm, maybe I’ll get them to call you instead?”
“Okay, that’s fine,” Mom replies. “So when is this trip?”
“Wednesday night,” I reply.
“And Thursday night,” Parker adds.
“It’s two nights?” I blurt at the same time as my parents.
Parker blinks. “Didn’t I mention that?”
Dad tilts his head at me. “You want to go camping for two nights?”
I gulp. “I guess.”
“We’re heading out Wednesday afternoon, and coming back on Friday morning,” Parker clarifies.
